Superb, Slick and Super-fun!

User Rating: 9.9 | Tekken 5 PS2
having unlocked all the characters and beaten the story mode with about half of the fighters I'm no authority on Tekken 5 but I've seen enough to have an opinion- This is by far the best Tekken thanks to superb game design, character balance and move tweaks. Fighters such as Bruce Irvin and Lee Chaolin have come into their own as unique characters, far removed from their days as fight doubles for Brian and Marshall. All the characters have individual move sets this time which makes the roster of 30 almost daunting to choose from. the Gameplay is so refined that it stands alone as the new benchmark in fighting games: Characters move with a fluidity and realism that is closer to a computer generated intro than an actual game. Everything about the core game is inspired and fresh excluding some carried over attack sounds which have become trademarks of the series. I love this game and recognise it as an 'instant classic'. As any quality review must identify imperfections I'm forced to include these few and insignificant ones- 1>While the Boss in story mode (Jinpachi) has the -it's about time -feature of a NORMAL sized health bar, His stun move and fireballs are cheap. 2>The new bonus mode gets boring and some of the extra features like character customization has too little variety. Besides those trivial complaints Tekken 5 is solid and currently untouchable as a console fighter! Think of this game as the ultimate thank you from the good people at Namco for us Tekken-heads supporting the franchise for ten years! No Namco, thank you! 3>
