A fast paced 2D shooter with excellent online multiplayer modes but lacking in single player depth and variety.

The main campaign is a fairly simple affair, with no story, but simply a series of 16 missions, 8 for both the both the Grunts and Jarheads, which just require killing a certain amount of enemies. The real challenge comes with being able to score over 1000 points on each level, which earns a commando score. The scores achieved on each level build up a total score. which can be compared to players worldwide.
There are a variety of weapons, split up into three sections. Primary weapons like shotguns, machine guns, grenade and rocket launchers, all cause different amounts of damage, with varying speeds of firing and reloading, which makes choosing a weapon important whilst respawning, as this is the only time weapons can be altered. There is also a pistol and knife as secondary weapons and mines, grenades and C-4 as traps to leave around the map. As well as these main weapons, there are some super guns that pop up from time to time in the levels. Each player has jetpack, which allows a limited amount of flight, making manoeuvring key to survival. There are also 2 types of vehicle, tanks and jeeps, which primarily run along rails but can also use the jetpack.
Bonuses during play are gained by killing opponents and staying alive, either increased speed, regenerated health, or a fire jetpack attack.
What makes the maps interesting is that there 2 layers, each accessible through tunnels. This adds more gameplay to the levels, like mounted guns which fire between the layers. Graphically the game is very simple, but has some subtle effects that add great detail. Despite the small characters, each gun is clearly identifiable, deaths are filled with over the top gore, and all the action which occurs in the background layer of the level is there to see. This makes finding opponents easier and adds to the game world.
The online arena is where the main depth of the game is. There are the standard deathmatch and team deathmatch options, as well as map objectives. Map objectives involve either destroying control panels or downloading information from computer panels and uploading them. The action online is quick and easy to set up, provides a fast paced alternative to playing against bots and most importantly is lag free.
The game is generally a very enjoyable experience, especially the fast paced online modes, but the deathmatch only single player game is a bit disappointing, especially the length of the campaign. Map objectives should have been added to the single player campaign, but are only available in online play. Also, apart from trophies and the ranking boards, there is very little incentive to keep earning experience points.
