A near arcade perfect port of a near Arcade perfect game.

User Rating: 9.2 | Tekken 3 (PlayStation the Best) PS
Tekken 3 has caused a fair amount of controversy and arguments. Centred mainly around which was better between it and Tekken 2, Tekken 3 came out a clear winner in the Arcades and thankfully, has been reproduced properly on the home console. If you were a fan of Tekken 2, or if you are just a fan of fighting games, than I have 2 words for you: buy it. Centred around the arcade game, there are also all the mode that came with Tekken 2, including versus, team battle, survival and practice. There are also some new modes that appear to be tacked on, however, are fun diversions from the main game. There is Tekken Ball mode, which draws a line between players and has them ferrying a volleyball back and forth via hits. Hitting the ball sucessfully with a powerful kick or punch will transfer the attack strength from that hit to the ball and if the opponent can not counter it, or let it fall on their side of the court, they lose health. Its an interesting game, but not something you will be spending a lot of time on. The other new mode is Tekken Force mode, a mode similar to Final Fight. However, not being able to move freely has left you on a small plain, where you side scroll attacking hundreds of very easy ninjas and finally, a character from the game. Its an easy and somewhat fun diversion, and if completed 4 times, will gain you access to a hidden character. From an initial 10 characters, the roster fils out to over 20. Many from Tekken 2 have made the leap to here, although there are some new characters with some distinctive styles, such as Eddy. However, the 2 Playstation only characters should have never been included. Dr. Boskonovitch, the scientist you may remember from Yoshimito's final movie on Tekken 2 and Gon, a popular Japanese comic character. They add little to the game, and have limited mobility and attacks. They dont have the charm of the other characters and feel like shallow characters that were thrown in as a last thought. There is also a Theater Mode, allowing you to view any of the admittedly beautiful FMV sequences, and this also allows you to put in the Tekken 2 disk, and have instant access to all it's FMV's too. It's a nice touch, and something that has been repeated in other fighters since. Graphics are incredible. Considering the speed and the amount of detail around them, the characters are never out of focus, or sluggish. Collsion detection is fantastic, with all the grabs, pushes, punches, kicks and otherwise being very convincing. You may just find yourself wincing slightly when your character has been given a very hard hit. Sound pushes the Playstation, with heaps of highly replayable and enjoyable tracks that add to the atmosphere. All the effects are well done, from the sound of your character yelling in pain, to the soundd of fist connecting cheek, its all there, and arcade-perfect. Gameplay wise, Tekken 3 will hold you. Not only are theree heaps of hidden characters to unlock and master, the versus mode will have you and a friend fighting for a good long time. This game comes highly recommended. If you're a fighting enthusiast, new to the Playstation, or just want something new to play, then get this. It's as deep as it gets for the Playstation, and the best of its ilk. Incredible.
