The Next Evolution of the Fighting Game...

User Rating: 10 | Tekken 2 PS
Sequels are nothing to be scoffed at in the world of gaming. It's common knowledge that most gaming sequels are not as good as the original (examples shown in Devil May Cry 2, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and others), but sometimes, and thats rarely, there are sequels that are miles better than the original (examples of this are Timesplitters 2, Dead or Alive 2 and Jak 2: Renegade). This game follows the path of the latter, being miles better than the original game. So where does this game improve from the first Tekken? With except for the prerequisite new characters, the game is also much more faster, and easier to pick up. The game, unlike the original Tekken console version, has about 20 different endings for all the characters, while in the original game, only the default characters had their own endings. The gameplay in this game, being very pivotal for a fighting game, is done magnificently. Firstly, Tekken is one of the few fighting games that don't have any projectile attacks or overpowered techniques. Tekken is a straight down, hand to hand fighter with emphasis on realism. The game is also a fast paced fighter, meaning that if you play your cards right, you can win fights in less than a minute. And unlike Virtua Fighter (Tekkens main competition), the game is doesn't rely so much on defense, as you know that you need to block or attack low as soon as your opponent blocks your attacks. In short, the gameplay is brilliant, and with 20 characters (all unique and different) theres a lot of time to be put in, mastering each of the characters. The game also sounds great as well. While there are no character voice-overs (unlike Soul Blade or the Soul Calibur games), there is little need for it in this game. Musically, the game sounds great there, with the final boss tune being one of the best tunes ever made in a fighting game. Tekken 2 also features two soundtracks, the arcade soundtrack (which you would've heard in the arcades, duh) and a Arrange soundtrack (completely new to the game). Needless to say, if you hated the music in the arcades, and want to hear some new tunes, you can switch over. The games graphics are great as well. If you compare them to the original Tekken, you'll notice a difference, but if you compare it to Tekken 3, again, you'll notice a difference. The character models look great, and look clear enough that you can make out a characters individual features. So should you get this game? Well, it's one of the most brilliant fighting games ever made, complete with some of the best music and characters you'll ever see in a fighter. Do get this game, for it's one of the best games ever made. And thats a Darth_Homer promise!
