Could never figure this out. I want to view a couple backpacks of my friends, but I know typing in the nickname doesn't work, because you get an error saying it couldn't find the profile. Is there any way I could actually view their Steam account name?

You can use the number on their Steam profile's URL, and put that into the URL for the backpack viewer.

Protip: get your friends to make a proper steam profile with custom url and then you can just use the url name to find your friends instead of having to cut and paste /48229471837910 into the search bar.

example: my profile's custom url is http://steamcommunity.com/id/arleas so if you searched for arleas, my profile would pop up immediately.

    No problem.

For the longest time I thought I didn't exist on the backpack viewing site, since I couldn't find my name by search, and also since typing in the name in the URL seems to work for certain accounts.

No wonder. I should probably get around to doing this.

Also some of your friends might have their backpacks set to private

One other thing: they're making their own backpack viewer (steam is) so you may be able to just go to their profile and click on "view inventory", though that may only show up on the steam beta right now (though I don't see why it would be beta only since it's just the equivalent of the other backpack viewers in the steam browser)

    Example (using mine again):
    http://steamcommunity.com/id/arleas/inventory/

    or some random guy:
    http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198017874210/inventory/

Look to see if there's an 'inventory' link on their profile page.

The inventory link on the profile page works well too, though I heard from some of my friends it doesn't update consistently. Iunno, I never had an issue with it.

Also the one on the TF2 backpack sites show a lot more detail I think.

The only thing I've noticed is that it doesn't display everything in backpack order. It seems to be more in line with what order the items dropped in... so your latest drops are at the end of your display, and the earlier drops are at the beginning of the page.

Also I don't think it shows you what craft number an item is (unless it would show up in your own backpack possibly).
