In November 2008, when Square Enix announced they were partnering with GPG, it was met with both anticipation and skepticism. How much influence would Enix have over the development of SupCom2? First, what needs to be understood is that Square Enix wanted to regain lost market share in the West. Second, they would certainly want to market this game worldwide. Which means that meeting the criteria of the SupCom faithful was a rescinded priority. The game is available in the U.S., the PAL Region, and Japan. Japanese influence is very apparent in the experimental units, some of which appear to be modeled reminiscent of Rodan and Godzilla. I prefer the color combinations of the new units and structures to the somewhat drab appearance of SupCom1 and FA. Like others, I wish there were more detail in the models, but this game is marketed for mass appeal, not graphic or technical precedent. I will say the color and detail of the maps is some of the best I have ever seen in an RTS. Some of the game pieces and structures are a bit 'cartoonish', which is due to the influence of Square Enix. One thing that is first rate is the HD sound. I have never heard big guns and explosions with this dynamic range from any other RTS. I don't like not being able to group my engineers together but I like that they repair any unit they are next to. I like using the research stations for advancing tech levels, but there are not many units to choose from, so variations in strategy are limited. I really like most of the units functions and certainly the power of the experimental units, but there is really nothing new here. With the resources and reputations of these two companies, I really wanted to see a Wow! factor. It is impressive, but doesn't break any new ground. I give it a 8.
Ah well, I really expected something amazing and worth myself going 'WOW!' but all I did was make a sad face, delete the game and go back to SC:FA. Basically, all they did here was removal. They removed almost all uni... Read Full Review
As a rather big fan of SC 1, with its genre first large area maps and massive unit counts for RTS's, I was absolutely looking forward to SC 2. What could go wrong? Simply rehash 1 with updated graphics and some new uni... Read Full Review
