Decent RTS, but relatively superficial

User Rating: 8 | Supreme Commander 2 PC
Supreme Commander 2 is a relatively decent RTS. It does many things correctly. First off, the graphics are nice and the performance is smooth. Second, they have some pretty useful mechanics (ex: scrolling up and down for the different modes; selecting multiple units at once).

The gameplay isn't half-bad either. Although the story/cut-scenes aren't particularly interesting, I think the game did a 'good enough' job in terms of keeping things interesting. Though note, by interesting, I mean it's really 'cutting it close'...

All in all, SC2 is a pretty solid RTS. The issues, however, are inbetween the lines. The strategy here is very weak, and the game is rather superficial (not just the storytelling, but the gameplay as well). For one thing, I found myself employing the same strategy over and over again. Massive number of turrets (impenetrable), mass units (no strategy), send them in, blow up everyone = win. This pretty much worked every time; even the final boss. The computer AI is fascinatingly stupid. Instead of flanking you from the side, if you mass turrets at the front of your base, they rush in akin to suicide.

By no means am I complaining. The units are rather cool looking, especially the experimentals. Also, I'm absolutely terrible with RTSs so this wasn't really that annoying for me, necessarily. The problem, however, is that I can't help but -notice- these flaws, and the utter lack in strategy. I can imagine this massively irritating more hardcore RTS fans, and I honestly can't imagine any of them being satisfied with this game's lack of complexity.
