Super Street Fighter II is back with new trimmings.

I have a hard time giving game reviews that compare games of the past with games of today any props. It's like comparing apples and oranges, to coin a phrase, so I try to steer clear of that when I review games of the past on the new consoles. Then there is SSFIIT, which is basically what Capcom did with Resident Evil and what Konami did with Metal Gear Solid on the GCN. So I really don't have a problem comparing it the tournament fighting games of now.

Back in the 90's Capsom got it right the first time, make a balanced tournament fighting expierence by creating 8 original combatants for Street Fighter II. Since then, they have just re-released it like Windows does every couple of years, the same thing with some new content. So enters Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD. Here Capcom has stayed with the core characters from the last re-interation of the Street Fighter franchise, added some moves from the Alpha series (but not from III which is good for cannon reasons). So basically if you are a Street Fighter vetran your favorite characters of the past are here and you pretty well know how to use them (leaving a huge disadvantage for newbees).

On to what is different. The graphics have completely overhauled. The fighters haven't looked this good since III. They are even better looking now. The music and sound effects have been upgraded so you will hear all of your hadokens in crystal clear surround. The music in particular is remixed from the prior themes that you know an love into more of a heavy metal/hard rock concert.

The game play is still as sharp as ever, so when you mess up, it's really your own fault. I do have to say that the AI in this game is just as ruthless as any vetran human opponent. Anything above easy and you are in for a frustrating fight to the top. Especially when it comes to the last boss, but then again Street Fighter has always been know for cheap shot final bosses.

There are of course achievments that can be unlocked in this game. But really this game is up against some tough competition with MK vs DCU, Virtua Figher 5, Soulcaliber IV, and Tekken 6 on the rise. Still SSFIIT is up for the challenge, just making you drool for the anticipation of SFIV (which if successful I am sure that Capcom will issue updates of that as well.

All in all vs. the CPU or vs. a human SSFIIT is the game that we all came to know and love from those long lost arcade games, it's just new and improved. I high recommend it to vetran fighters, fans, and newbees alike. It goes to show that 2-D fighter once were held supreme during a simpler and more civil time period. Thanks for reading.
