A superb downloadable game
Gameplay can loosely be compared as a hyper-frenetic Asteroids crossed with Geometry Wars but the different weapon types, bosses, superb 3D graphics and an addictive quatlity that will keep you coming back over and over again. If you liked Geometry Wars you will love this game. It is everything of GW but taken up a notch and then some.
There isn't much plot to the game except that you pilot a ship defending a world from giant asteroids and aliens. Your left analogue stick controls your movement, your right controls your direction of fire. Shoulder buttons map onto bombs, thrust and switching weapons. The goal is to clear everything on the phase and work onto the next. Get hit by something and you lose a life. Lose all your lives and its game over. The faster you clear the level, the more bonus you get. There are five planets in total and five phases to each planet with a boss at the end of each. Once you complete a planet you unlock it so you can start a new game from that point. Your score is recorded online and you can compare your scores to your friends. There is also an offline co-op play.
Gameplay gives a new definition to the word intense. Break up a big asteroid and it releases dozens of little ones that go flying around. Sometimes the whole map will be pelted with asteroids and you find yourself frantically trying to avoid them. There can be hundreds of things happening on screen and split second reactions can mean the difference between life and death. You will wonder how you managed to escape some situations and will curse loudly other times because some solitary asteroid hit you while you were relatively safe. This game is highly addictive and you will find yourself constantly trying to beat your own high score.
The graphics are amazing, the game is amazing. If you were thinking of buying a PS3, this humble download game alone could be enough to tip you over the edge. If there is a downside to the game it is that the music is not customisable. Otherwise this game is absolutely superb. It is one of the best downloadables for any platform and certainly the best for the PS3.
