The first SSB, for the N64, was an alright fighter that took Nintendo's key characters and pitted them against eachother. Melee, for the Gamecube, took all of that and made it 100% better!
What do you do in this game? Fight with Nintendo Characters! Link against Ganondorf? Yep. Mario vs. Bowser? You bet! Even Jigglypuff and Zelda against Mario and Captain Falcon! Entirely Possible! I mean, the possibilities are ENDLESS in this game, and it's one of the best games that I own!
Nintendo's handled the controls well. They're not too hard to learn, and there are a bunch of different moves you can use in the game. Each character has a different attack. Mario's got his fireballs, Ness has his bat, and Link with his epic Master Sword.
Like the first one, the fighting style is different than other games. In the game, you start at 0%, and as you get hit, you gain percentage. The more percent you have, the easier it is to knock you out. 50% will knock you a little, 250% will hit you out of the park with a couple punches.
The graphics really show off what the GameCube can do. Everything is fluidly designed, and you can tell Nintendo spent a lot of time and effort on the project. All of the weapons are seen with their own little twist.
The sound is great. Everything from the original Mushroom Kingdom theme to the Final Destination music is here, along with several other great tracks. Everyone has their own set of grunts and shouts, such as Marios Woo-Hoos or Link's...uh..."SHEAAAAA"!
There are lots of different modes, too. You have tiny mode, giant mode, and sudden death mode with up to four friends. And while the Single Player doesn't have a campaign such as Brawl's Subspace Emissary, it makes up for it with Adventure mode, a mode which takes you across the world of Nintendo, which each level having it's own respective character's world.
SSBM is a great game. It's just awesome. It's the ultimate party game! Got a Gamecube, or a cheaper version of Brawl on your Wii? Get this game. You won't regret it!
