Super Smash Bros. on handheld is a fun new addition, but seems like the Wii U version will be superior

User Rating: 8 | Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 3DS

With the 4th addition to Super Smash Bros. now out. The game certainly did live up to its hype and every new character trailer made me want the game all the more.

Story: 6/10

Since it is a fighting game, the extent of the story is just fighting your way through various in-game characters to eventually fight the master hand at the end of the game. However, in this installment, you are given a choice of three paths to pick from so you have an option of which character to fight next. You can also choose which intensity to fight next. In addition, you also have a lot of options on how hard the fighting will be. Even though this is a nice new add, the story is nothing more than just fighting. It would be nice to see a small story about each character as you make your run through the classic mode or a different mode. With so many worlds coming together in the game, it feels like wasted potential.

Score: 9.5/10

Super Smash Bros. has all the best music from every game series compiled into it. So, yeah, it’s got a pretty good soundtrack to it.

Characters/Character Development: 9.5/10

Just like with the music, Nintendo has taken all the fan favorite characters and put them into one action packed fighting game. Not only that, the newest additions to this particular generation of Super Smash Bros. made the game feel even more exciting. My personal favorite is Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles.

Graphics: 8/10

Graphics do look pretty good, but it does feel limited by the capabilities of being on a handheld device, especially when comparing it to the graphics of the version on the Wii U. Still, it is visually pleasing.

Gameplay: 7.5/10

Gameplay for Smash Bros. is really good and definitely has an innovative twist on the fighting game genre, but it doesn’t take any huge steps in the gameplay from Brawl. It’s true that ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ but it would be nice to feel like there’s more too it then a few new game modes and characters.

Fun: 7/10

Pitting your favorite characters against one another is certainly fun, but for me personally, I just couldn’t play it for more than an hour or two without getting bored and wanting to do something else. That being said, I still have wanted to keep playing it and haven’t stopped since its release.
