D.I.C.E 07: Super Rub-A-Dub First Look

What happens when ducks and the Sixaxis meet?

LAS VEGAS--At his D.I.C.E. Summit session, Phil Harrison gave a sneak peek at a new downloadable game in development for the PlayStation 3: Super Rub-A-Dub. In the original game, realistic water physics and rubber ducks are blended with such old-school puzzlers as Flicky and Super Monkey Ball. While there wasn't much information given out on the game in the D.I.C.E. session where Harrison showed it off, we caught up with him shortly after for a quick word about the game.

The simple game started life in much the same way that Geometry Wars came to be: as a basic demo. In Super Rub-A-Dub's case, the game started as a physics sim demonstrating water effects on the PS3. Once the Sixaxis controller was used to move the water around, the notion to include ducks and add some proper gameplay was raised; thus, the demo evolved into something else.

Your task in Super Rub-A-Dub is to guide a duck around a tub, freeing smaller ducks from bubbles and leading the whole trail of liberated fowl to an exit while avoiding obstacles. From the look of it, you'll be rated on how long it takes you to clear a level. The brief demo of the game during Harrison's session showed some different tub layouts and hazards that make getting your gaggle of ducks to safety more difficult. The act of collecting the ducks bears some similarities to Sega's old-school bird platformer Flicky. The actual control, which relies on the Sixaxis to manipulate the flat plain of the tub, also calls to mind Super Monkey Ball. In following up with Harrison, we found out that the game will feature a global world-ranking system and feature progressively more challenging layouts, which will apparently feature hazards, such as sharks. There will also be controls to flip your duck when necessary.

From the look of it, Super Rub-A-Dub is looking like a breezy arcade game that should be a fun addition to the thin PS3 lineup. The leaderboard functionality and simple gameplay should make the game appeal to persistent players who want to improve their performance. While an exact date for the game's release wasn't given, Harrison mentioned it was due out in the next few weeks.

rockybob: "Spin it however you want, its just a tech demo turned into a game." Actually, that's EXACTLY what we're calling it. But wait, why are YOU getting so worked up over a tech demo? ranman1990: You make my brain hurt. Stop posting.

Actually, I play PC games. Mostly Vanguard with some CS:S mixed in. Just irritating to see obvious fanboys call the kettle black.

Cool I guess. I love Geometry Wars, which started a tech demo too. I saw the tech demo of this and always thought that if developed further, it could be a game.

Sooooo ur not playing GeoW, are ya then, eh rockybob? lol. Yeah, it is a tech demo, but it could very well turn out to be a full blown classic, if given some time. BUT i agree with u, it's just a tech demo and ISN'T worth writing about NOW. But later on, maybe...

rubber ducky? Well I don't know about that, then again easy games can be fun. Don' t worry guys if you can't afford a PS3 I'm sure the Xbox, and the Wii will copy it soon!!!

"blurrrboy Fanboys, just go play your Gears of War. I mean, you aren't bored with it yet, are you?" While you play what? Super Rub-A-Dub? Resistance? Surely you're not saying the PS3 has more content than the 360. Super Rub-A-Dub is hardly worth writing home about. Spin it however you want, its just a tech demo turned into a game.

I'd rather have a new, original game that a stupid port of Paperboy. Actually, let me rephrase that. I'd rather have a new, original game (take that with a grain of salt; everybody steals ideas from everybody else) than a port of a game that I have either: 1) played already or 2) didn't care enough to buy the first time around This game may not be making the Cell processor burst into flames with its graphical prowess, but at least there seems to be a genuine interest in making more new experiences over at Sony than just simple rehashes of old arcade titles. Then again, when you promise people a new game every week (because it's SOOOOO hard to get a ROM off a cartridge, or to make Paperboy work on a console that is 100s, if not 1000s of times more powerful), something has to give. Looks like quality and effort was at the top of the list. Don't worry though, at least they are still making money off of you. Fanboys, just go play your Gears of War. I mean, you aren't bored with it yet, are you?

I think it needs to be pointed out that a gaggle refers to a group of geese, and not ducks. A group of ducks is referred to as a raft, a paddling or simply a bunch. Horrible, horrible work there, gamespot. Just in case sarcasm escapes some people, I am in no way serious about this ....

I might spend my graduation money on a PS3 just because of this game... no joke I'll buy MGS4 and resistance and all that stuff.. but this will be the reason i dont wait till i can actually afford it...

Yeah, yeah, because Geometry Wars unleashed the awesome power of the 360, as we all know. In fact, XBL is full of games much like Super Rub-a-Dub in their complexity. Can y'all get over this stupid, predictable and utterly spent notion that every game must feature graphics so stunning they cause involuntary bowel release in order to be worth playing? Then again, it's not like the haters care about the game, they just skim the article to determine whether this is the appropriate place for their latest SONY IZ TEH SUK!!@1! diatribe. Well played!

First off, I don't think this game is lame at all. This game is meant for everyone. Yes, I do think that they're trying to show off the power of the PS3 and its much ballyhooed Cell Processor. How many times did you ever play in a tub of water while you were a kid? Maybe, taking a bubble bath with some rubber duckies in your tub? What if you could control the rubber duckies in the tub with you? What if you could have realistic water physics and weight properties and other stuff taking place in real time while you control your duck around the "pond"? Technically speaking, it would be "real". I think this game is a really cool idea. I'd LOVE to play around with it. I think that Phil Harrison is the best face that represents SONY. He's legit, no doubt about it. Is this game God of War 2? Heck no, but I think it's a really cool idea and a promising start to what PS3 really has to offer. (ie. original ideas, rather than, ahem, different twists on the FPS)

Wow, is this the only "free" thing out for the PS3? I thought it cost a buck or 2 just to boot up the system.

You kids are oh-so-silly. You can't really make fun of a system based off of a free demo; that's just poor taste. The ps3 does provide free demos and downloadable games through its marketplace, but that isn't all the ps3 has to offer. The demos and games are not meant to "tap into the ps3's ultimate power" or "become the next killer app". Instead, these games are meant to be something as a little fun thing to play on the side. However, if you feel that you need to ridicule a free demo that ps3 users will be getting, go for it. You make yourself look a whole lot cooler. I promise. :]

To the people "bashing" the PS3 because of this game: Actually, this goes to show how Sony is appreciating its costumers. Now let me explain: the rubber duck is sort of a cult hit, so they're making a little game (most probably free) just for us to play around with a demo that we all love. I'd love to fool around with this game, and it'll be great not paying for it with my free online services. You know, not having to pay for an account just to get something like this?
