Great vc game

User Rating: 10 | Super Metroid SNES
I missed out big time back in 1993. I never had an SNES, so I never got an opportunity to play this game. I had played the original Metroid back in the day, but it wasn't all that great. I had played other Metroid games though such as Fusion and Zero Mission, and I loved them. I had always heard this game as the best game in the series. Now, here I am, over 10 years later, finally getting an opportunity to play it. So without a second thought, I put down the 800 Wii points to download it.

I started playing and really liked Samus's telling of her story. The picture of Samus was very nice. I also liked the flashbacks to the Mother Brain and the larva Metroid. The scenes of the professors and Samus were also beautiful. Now, here I am, playing now in Ceres Space Station. The atmosphere and eerie noises perfectly suited the mood. The first fight was fairly basic, and then there was the escape. I really liked at the end of the escape how the room would tilt while the station rocked.

Now, the real part of the game begins. You land on planet Zebes, and your exploration begins. This game is very much based on exploration, but the controls and physics aren't so frustrating unlike the original Metroid. You can try bombing everything to see if there's a secret passage. The game flow moves however you want it to. It's still slightly restricted because there are times when you know you hit a dead end because the blocks there require an item you don't have. There are a huge amount of upgrades. They can be beams, jumps, missles, even an X-ray Visor. The Speed Booster is the best Metroid upgrade ever.

The graphics are beautiful. They really pushed the power of the SNES. While it may not be quite the caliber of Star Fox, still it's pretty dang good. All the areas feel just like an alien world. From the underwater world of Maridia to the flaming areas of Norfair, everything looks like what it's supposed to represent. The bosses such as Kraid were very detailed. The glowing red eyes on Kraid and Ridley in the beginning were nice.

The music, like in all Metroid games is very memorable and fitting to the environments. The Norfair music is just the kind of music I would expect in a fiery cavern. The Maridia music made me think of being underwater, and the boss battle music was very frightening, like it should be. All the familiar Metroid jingles are hear, such as getting an item. The sound effects, such as all the lava bubbling noises were realistic especially for the 16 bit era. I was even suprised by the quality of the narrating voice at the beginning (which I've heard is Dano from NOA's voice).

I can definitely see why this game is the best Metroid game in the series. Not only that, it's one of the best games ever (at least it's on my top 10). I really don't have any gripes about this game. You can almost go as far to say it's pretty much perfect. The only reason it's not higher is becasue there are only few better game out there. If you haven't downloaded this game yet, it's worth the 800 Wii points. Heck, I'd pay 1000 Wii Points for it.

The focus of this game is exploration. No one or nothing tells you what to do. It's just you on your own. You can get items to advance through rooms you thought were dead ends before. The object of the game is to defeat all the main bosses and defeat the Mother Brain. The beauty of this game though is, there are a million ways to do this. You can also customize the controls and Samus to your likings. You can turn on and off power ups such as beams, suits, and even your much needed Morph Ball. This game is very long also, at least for first timers (like me). I've been playing it almost non stop and still have yet to beat other main bosses than Kraid.

Like I said before, on my personal list of the top ten best games of all time, this one definitely deserves a place on there. You should definitely download it, even it you've played it before. Nothing has changed from the SNES version, I promise.
