3 Like @linedrive09 yeah, no re-playability at all...I played like 50 hours or more and still did not manage to complete everything. Bad re-playability indeed.
Ha, I like how he said "raise your arms in victory". I must confess, I totally did that when I beat The End. Seriously... and there's still more to go even after that. What a fantastic, awesomely challenging game.
didnt get this game till now as i just see stuff like this as ..'appy' . . .but god what a game. glued to it. add me 'Statix Ex' i need some people who have it to compare times
For those that don't understand why this game is so great: 1) The so-called graphics. The actual visuals are basic, but the aesthetics are through the roof. Go watch Extra Credits to understand the difference. 2) The controls are simple and seemless. 3) It's a relentlessly unforgiving game, moreso than Demon's Souls. So if you want a challenge... 4) Even when you die (and you will), you pop right back up so quick that you can't even mourn your death. 5) The sheer NUMBER of levels.

My hand hurts so bad after playing the dark world for 4 hours straight. It's painfully addicting. My wife, nephew, and I all are having too much fun with this game.
eyerok this game may be as good as close to perfection but you obviously are far from it . i wonder how many times you had jumped on the noob vagon playing those generic! games.
ROFL i just went to DL the demo, FIFTEEN BUCKS!? ROFL ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? someone definitely got paid off to do this review, complete BS that a game with terrible character design, names, and ugly levels that costs 15$ and is not an indie game would get a 9.5. not to mention this guy doesn't even mention the questionable graphics in general, really? man up gamespot i used to enjoy watching your reviews but this is garbage. if your wondering i DID download the demo, the game itself is not terrible. but you review the ENTIRE package when it comes to games. that includes gameplay, story, glitches, price, graphics, soundtrack in short the whole presentation. this presentation IS NOT WORTHY OF FIFTEEN DOLLARS. i seriously almost died laughing when i saw the price and then got angry at the company for having the audacity to charge that much, absolutely ridiculous. 9.5 is 1 grade away from PERFECTION are you serious gamespot? this is worthy of a 9+ grade? your bat sh*t crazy. the price tag alone drops it a full 1 point IMHO. im not saying there are no redeeming qualities to this game, but it is not a 9.5 period.
im going to give this game the benefit of a doubt and DL the demo after watching this review. but seriously the graphics are ass. this is 2011, the poor graphic designs should have been mentioned. if this game is over 5$ it does not deserve a 9.5 imho, maybe a 9 if its as good as is said(which i will demo here soon). im not saying a game has to have amazing graphics to be good, but honestly... this game visually looks terrible. literally the worst looking non-indie game ive seen in about 10 years... no joke, your character is a square.
great game, very challenging, but hes right, you don't get too frustrated. Once you complete a level, if you die a lot of times, the replay is pretty funny
@TommyT456 - if that's how you put it, I cant deny that you're absolutely right. I admit I should have expressed my opinion in a better way, but i guess I was a bit pissed at that point.
@eyerok Yes that exactly the point I thought you were trying to make, which is why I agreed with you, jus maybe not with how you said it (which you have just recognised in your comment.) And I was just backing up people who only play mainstream games because alot of them are great games but you are absolutly right that if they let simple graphics put them off even trying a game then they shouldnt diss said game as these style titles are often absolute gems
@TommyT456 - I never used the words "noob" or "flashy game". I guess I should have made it clearer. SMB is a niche. It is only meant for a selective audience. On the other hand, ME, AC, GoW, Halo, CoD etc have strong mainstream elements in them. It is unfair for mainstream gamers to criticize something like SMB or mirror's Edge (which I consider more of an underrated gem than mainstream). My only mistake was adding the words " Or generic shooters" in the same line as AC and ME. That gave an impression that I was looking down on those games, although its not true. I just get pissed when people get elitist and drag mainstream favs in discussions for games like SMB. If they dont like it, they can stick to the usual stuff. No need for hating on games that arent your type or you havent even tried to begin with (as is the case with most Super meat boy haters) The reaction to my post alone shows how people can overreact when someone mentions mainstream titles. This game IS for Hardcore gamers in the sense that it does not have elements of casual or mainstream. That much should be obvious from the review. But does that mean I'm saying mainstream games are for noobs or kids? I never said that, in fact that would be pretentious on my part. Theres a difference between saying "stick to your usual stuff" and "your fav game sucks and super meat boy is better". If you want to know who the post was meant for, read some of the comments below. And THEN tell me if there's anything wrong with my post
@eyerok Although you went a bit overboard in trying to put your view across you're basically saying that games with great classic gameplay but simple graphics etc should get more praise than the games that simply excel technically, fair ebough. But alot of todays games manage both, technical prowess with great gameplay and difficulty levels available that seperate the men from the boys when it comes to old school gaming skill. So although you're right in saying that fans of flashy games shouldn't talk smack about games like meatboy, on the flip side you should live by what you preach and not make out games are for noobs if they simply manage to look good. We're all game fans here and most of us appreciate all different genres, from hidden gems requiring lots of old school gaming skill (such as meatboy, braid) to games that provide a memorable epic story along with addictive gameplay (ME, AC, Fallout etc) even if they dont provide the challenge you clearly relish. You can have the best of both worlds, for instance vanquish is beautiful but can also be challenging when going through the harder challenges, bosses etc, Mirrors edge demands perfection if you are a completionist, and games like Killzone are difficult when you ramp up the difficulty level. But you dont have to just play games to prove your skill, they are there for fun first and foremost, view them like interactive movies and maybe you'll appreciate the beauty of the story telling and art in alot of todays masterpieces.
I love this game, but never gets frustrating? Come on now Tom, did you really play the game all way through before you wrote that review? :P I'm only on the last stage (level 5) on The End, and yikes... My thumbs are so sore, they're not sore anymore, they're numb! Have to take a break every now and then, maybe I squeeze too much. I can't even begin to imagine what some of these later stages are like in the dark world... I know one thing though, they will definitely be frustrating!
@sleeping_badger - you're right, but you're overlooking the fact that I'm not hating on the games, but the gamers. That 'generic shooter' was supposed to be seperate from ME and AC, cuz they're not really shooters (although ME has shooting elements). There's a difference between mainstream games, that everybody plays, and games that dont have any strong element of 'casual' in them. Thats as far as my personal opinion goes on those games I mentioned, and I'm not a hater of those games, but rather the gamers who're mostly into high budget mainstream games acting all elitist when games like this one gets a high score. Ofcourse that doesn't make me a non-elitist, that much I admit. But you're wrong in thinking that I was hating on those games and not those people below, although its understandable why you'd think so since you gave AC a high score.

Clearly this states your opinion on those games. You shouldn't let those haters get to you. @Sleeping_Badger - what makes you think I'm hating against those games? my only point was that people shouldn't just pop-up randomly on video reviews to criticize that game, that's just ridiculous and something I haven't done. I never said AC or ME were not hardcore, just that if people dont like what they see they should stick to the games they know and love best.
@eyerok chillax bro. this game might be a great game, but in no way shape or form should you be talking down about AC or ME series. Yeah they might be mainstream but that doesn't mean they're not good. Calling people noobs for liking them just makes you an elitist jerk. I'm sorry I'm not your definition of a "hardcore" gamer and I'm sorry I like to play certain mainstream games because they are fun. But thank the Lord I don't post on the anon interweb looking down on people for the games they enjoy. That is all.
The only game that makes you laugh and smile when you die 30 times instant death replay classic
Having bought it on Steam and had a chance to play it, I can see where all the hype is coming from. Yes, it's an incredibly basic game. Yes, the graphics are basic. But that's the point. By minimalizing everything but the level design and gameplay, it's probably the smoothest, most challenging and rewarding game out there.
the game looks really cheap but with a second look you can see the depth of this game and its amazing design...will try this game!
To be honest, the first time I saw this review a month ago, I thought the game was just OK. But when I actually played it, I really liked it and quickly got addicted to it. The more I play it, the more I fall in love with it. And now I can safely say that this is one of the best games I've played in the last couple of years. So all those who feel skeptical should actually give this a try. And PC gamers should play it on the game-pad, its much better that way (I'm playing it on my PC with a 360 game-pad). And wow, I see a lot of haters here who are wondering whats so great but havent actually played the game. My advice to them is, just stick to your assasins creed, ME 2 or whatever generic shooter you're loving these days. This game is for hardcore gamers only. It fills the void that was left by Braid...this game is not as artistic but it is AS good a game as braid. And Braid was better than almost every mainstream game you people have been wetting your pants for in the last 5 years. Noobs

Best platformer I have ever played... You die so much in this game but you never get angry because of that...Awesome...So much fun...I hope there will be a Super Meat Boy 2 or a trilogy... :)
