The original Super Mario Land, which debuted in 1989, was a resounding success that prompted Nintendo to create its sequel, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992. Both games were not directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, and instead by Hiroji Kiyotake, who designed Wario and directed Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Selling an estimated 11.09 million, Super Mario Land 2 is the fifth best selling game of the system, which can only be rivaled by the likes of the Pokemon series and Tetris in sales. Eight times larger than its prequel, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins demonstrates that even on the Game-boy system; this plumber can still perform just as well in comparison to its consoles cousins in an impressive environment with a plethora of new game-mechanics, characters, and power-ups that create a fun game.

The story begins right after the first game; Wario takes control of Mario Land and places a spell on all the inhabitants to attack Mario. In retaliation, Mario decides to confront Wario, but in order to achieve his goals; Mario needs to gain six coins from six different levels in order to unlock the door blocking his castle. The game-play is identical to other Mario title, but with a several slight differences such as Mario feeling lighter when he jumps, different power-ups such as the bunny ears, and the different challenge in every level. The music," graphics" and the enemy design definitely allow this game to stand out from the rest as it's a refreshing trip from the usual stock of music and enemies such as koopas (not to say that they aren't there).

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a great game and has evolved into a classic that everyone should play. I personally enjoyed the game, but grew weary of several sections of the game, which I didn't take keen to (such as the water levels). Great for occasional game sessions, speed-runs, and road trips; Super Mario Land 2 fills the need for gaming for almost all situations. A must-have for the Gameboy and a great game even for the standards of all Mario games, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is, by no means perfect, a video game that all ages can enjoy, whether they grew up with it or stumbling upon it in a yard-sale or the 3DS's eshop.
