Its a really fun game don't get me wrong, but a 10/10 is laughably wrong.

User Rating: 9.5 | Super Mario Galaxy 2 WII
The Gamespot review giving it a 10/10 is... well lets just say 100% completely wrong. Yes, I am saying someones opinion is factually wrong, it isn't a matter of opinion at all.

Now, at this point I'm sure your asking 'Vault-Boy, what makes you hate this score so much you Fallout loving freak?' and to that I say I haven't even beaten Fallout 2 or played Tactics and this game is outshined by every 3d predecessor in some way or another, and to be 10/10 means your the best of the best, flawless. So, instead of a regular way of reviewing a game, I am going to do this is a manor of comparing it to other (and in some case better) games. Lets start back in 1996

Way back when, while the world was still backwards and primitive, there Bill Clinton was elected President, Leonardo DiCaprio thought he was able to play a believable Romeo and Super Mario 64 hit the shelves (and by hit, I mean ran over them with a tank made completely out of money). Yes, SM64 sold like hotcakes with breast milk instead of syrup and with good reason. It was f*cking awesome. The gameplay was new and added a spin to the formerly strictly 2D series. It had great map design, a variety of enemies, some of the best boss fights in history and truly awesome powerups. This will be my main argument, as this game outshines SMG2 in every way listed. The maps in SMG might have a nice retexture each time but take that away and its really just the same 6 or 7 minimaps copy/pasted over in over. In SM64 there was a snow level, a lava level, a lava level, a lava level, a desert level, a floating level (that got ripped off in a 'homage' to SM64) a bomb-omb level AKA the best level in video game history and about 15 others. An abstract metaphore for Nintendo's repetition and lack of quality in this newest generations games? Of course not, that would be actually somewhat clever!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has an awful low of power ups... to bad all of them suck complete balls. The stone handles like a a drunk man on a segway, the rolling ball handles like a drunk man on a segway trying to balance a spinning plate on a stick, the fireflower is just so dried up and overused even the worlds oldest hooker looks at it in disgust and everything else was in Donkey Kong 64.

Now to my next criticism, Yoshi. Don't get me wrong, playing as Yoshi can be fun, but to make that the reason for making a whole new game is an idea from Super Mario World, which I remind you was from 1990. Not to mention they made a game not to many yonks ago with Yoshi called Super Mario Sunshine that wasn't to bad, but considering the most fun part of the game was when your super soaker was taken away the whole thing seemed unnecessary. But, I'll save that review for a later day, back to the point. In Super Mario Sunshine when you play Yoshi you can shoot a laser. Yes, a laser. In SMG2 you go around and rip off Lanky Kong.

Another complaint was the boss fights. There are some pretty nice fights, but not really anything memorable. And then some of the boss fights are just down right arbitrary and painfully tedious. The final fight with Bowser was actually the last 2 fights with him just a teeny bit less easy (and yes I know it was the same in SM64, but it was a good enough boss fight for me to look past it). It does, however have a second phase but it makes a boss fight that was a walk in the park into a nap on a park bench.

The controls are also a huge flaw from time to time. The constant Wii Mote waggling can be fun, but the unresponsiveness and required effort put into it gives you all the pain of 3rd degree wankers cramp without the fun part of petting your Pink Floyd.

Lastly, a game with no online has to have some replay value if it wants to go for full price. With this game the replay value is full of sh*t. To finish the game you have to go through and navigate through all the decent levels, replaying them is the definition of boredom. To replay all the boring levels redefines the word.

Now, don't take away from this that SMG2 is a bad game. The game is probably one of the best on the Wii (which isn't saying an awful lot, but there are still good games like No More Heroes, Donkey Kong Country, SSBB, etc.) and anyone with an interest in either Mario or just looking to get some use out of there Wii should pick it up. If not, this probably wont sway your opinion on Mario games and if you don't if you haven't even played the series than please tell me how your able to survive living on the moon.
