Can the Cosmic Clones be defeated?

Even though the Cosmic Clones can be annoying and should be avoided, can they be defeated other than finishing an achievement (e.g. collecting the last star piece)?

If you run into one and take damage, that one will disappear. Other that that, there is no way but to accomplish the objective.

No. When you bump on a clone, you will take damage, and that clone will vanish without any reward.
