Marios Greatest 2D Adventure....and one of the most brilliantly designed games of all time...

User Rating: 10 | Super Mario Bros. 3 NES
There are great games, and then there are classic games, and the Super Mario Bros games go well and above classic status into immortal classics. Arguably the first ever platformer series created, these classic games paved the way for videogaming to truly become what it is today. After releasing the 'black sheep' of the Super Mario games, Super Mario Bros 2, Nintendo went back to basics to create another Mario game, and this time, they pulled out all the stops to create not only one of the best platformers ever released, but one of the best games ever. What exactly did this game do to make it so great? A lot I can tell you. Firstly, the game had a map screen, to show where to go next. This became a hub of sorts, which would be later used in other games. By entering special places on the map, you could collect items that you could use before starting a level. You could be normal Mario, but, by collecting a Mushroom, and using it before you started a level, you could already become Super Mario (i.e the bigger one). There were more items than just the Mushroom, Flower and Star, there was a Leaf that allowed you to fly for a short period of time, two suits that allowed better swimming abilities and the ability to become invulnerable to enemy attacks (by sacrficing your ability to move) and a item that allowed you to be able to fly for as long as you want. Graphically, this game is brilliant. The backgrounds and enemies are well designed, and this game has some of the most well-designed levels to ever grace the videogaming world. Also, the games introduction is one of the best to have ever been designed. The game also has a great sound aspect. While there aren't many classic tunes like the Main and Underground Themes of the original SMB, there are still some good parts. The classic 'invincibility' tune is here, and it still sounds as good as ever. The opening tune for the intro is a great gaming tune. In short, this is one game that needs to be played by everyone. This is one of the most brilliant games of all time, and worth owning...
