I would almost say "fun". Probably about as entertaining as Mario Party 5.

The game definitely has a new gameplay experience, but it isn't good. The sudden change in style was way too much, and totally lost the magic of the original. I would have to rank this among worst game sequels considering the change in how fun the original and how this one is simply "ok." SMB2 seemed to be a mix of the side scrolling action from SMB and the arcade style gameplay of Mario Brothers. The result was boring repetitive levels, easy bosses and a lack of in-game newness. The soundtrack will not be remembered like the other two games in the SMB series. And the whole game was almost forgotten, until recently with the release of Super Mario Advance, only giving us an opportunity to avoid the game all over again.
