Super Mario Allstars + World is certainly one Mario's finest moments and easily one of the best games of all time

User Rating: 10 | Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World SNES
Super Mario All-stars is clearly one of the greatest gaming collections of all time. Allstars combined all the Mario games that appeared on the NES, including the Japanese version of Super Mario Brothers 2 and extended on everything. The graphics, sound and sometimes the gameplay itself, were vastly improved compared to their NES equivalents, still intact and fun as ever. However it wasn't perfect.

There was something missing from All-stars that would make the already excellent collection perfect, this of course, was the almighty Super Mario World. Now many of you know already how perfect this game was, but combined with All-stars this is truly the greatest game on Snes right? You're close enough.

It goes without saying that everything is right with this game, everything. The visuals are beautiful, taking both advantage of the SNES' array of colours, effects and details as well as the fantastic cartoon art we've learned to know and love from Mario.

The animation is crisp, movements on each Mario game feel fantastic and the pase of the game is still speedy as always, with each game running at the standard 50/60 FPS. Perhaps the only thing missing visually, is anything unique or different compared to other SNES games, but they still look fantastic anyway, and hardly disappoint.

So then the sound. You would have to be a fool to call Mario's unique, bright and colourful soundtrack weak, because this is not the case at all, in any of the Mario games. The well known music and sound effects in the NES games have been completely updated in 16 bit glory. Every noise produced by the game sounds delicious, almost edible as you might expect from the way I've described it.

Although you probably will think the same to me having played Super Mario World, which has been added to the collection also. Yoshi eats everything! Although while we're still on the subject of music, I will mention that the changes made in Mario World were also fantastic, sound included. The only Mario game that feels slightly out of place, is Mario 2, although I'll come back to that subject later.

We know gameplay is important, and since it's Mario, you know what to expect. It's varies from game to game, however the vast majority of the time, you'll be experiencing the best kind of simple but addictive gameplay. Mario, in all of his games, has the best kind of formula for delievering a decent game and it's clear they know, because it certainly shows. So with that in mind, there is little use describing how much fun you'll simply get from the jumping on Koopa's heads or collecting coins. It's a platformer, and one of the 1st of it's kind.

Once again, it goes without saying that Mario 2 sticks out and the fact the developers made little changes to it is the only gripe I'll have to address. But, I'll continue to describe the game before I delve any further into the matter. So Lastly, the actual length and value of the Mario is fantastic as you've already guessed from the actual contents and improvements made to this collection.

Essentially, you have 3 & 1/2 (Japanese Mario 2) already long NES adventure games, changed to meet the expected high standard of SNES games. And with the combined might of Super Mario World - One of the best platformers in existence, well into competition of greatest SNES title and you have pure perfection.

Although despite this, there are a few, very minor gripes the game has that you'll have to get over. This includes the clear distinction Super Mario Brothers 2 has from the rest of the collection. Many of you already know that Mario 2 wasn't originally Mario 2, and it's clear. With the SNES All-stars collection, they've now had 2 chances to change what separated Mario 2 from the rest of the collection, however (interestingly) Nintendo haven't opted to do so in this collection.

So replacement music, characters or gamplay haven't been changed enough to distance itself from this truth and is clearly the weakest Mario game because of this. However overall, this is one of the greatest game collections ever and easily one of the greatest game's ever because of this. Mario All-stars + World is certainly one Mario's finest moments, one of the greatest send-off's for Super Nintendo and easily one of the best games of all time - Buy this game!
