Super Mario Advance is a collection of two classic games: the upgraded version of Super Mario Bros. 2, which appeared in the SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars and began its life in Japan as something other than a Mario game, and a remake of the original Mario Bros. While the enhanced Super Mario Bros. 2 serves as the primary single-player mode in Super Mario Advance, the original Mario Bros. is essentially the game's multiplayer mode, in which up to four players can compete at once using the GBA link cable. It's disappointing that Nintendo chose not to create a new Mario game for the launch of the Game Boy Advance and in fact included only token enhancements in the upgraded version of Super Mario Bros. 2. Those familiar with Super Mario Bros. 2 will recall that its pace was noticeably different from other Mario platformers. The general cadence demanded methodical movements and usually led to a deliberate gameplay experience--enemies were at every step, and they forced the player to creep cautiously along the stages. For better or worse, that gameplay feel has translated faithfully to the Game Boy Advance version. In the game, you must select from one of four familiar characters--Mario, Princess Peach, Toad, and Luigi--and each has his or her own unique strengths and weaknesses. At the beginning of each level, you can select a new character--particularly one whose skills are best suited to that particular stage. This adds a welcome dynamic of strategy to the generally direct gameplay of other Mario platformers. The system in general is comparatively more complex, as you can pluck various plants from the ground and hurl them at enemies and even pick up enemies and throw them at others, instead of simply jumping on them. Additionally, the level design is decidedly more vertical in nature than in other Mario games, as you'll have to climb ladders and vines and negotiate ascending levels of platforms. To make matters more interesting, although the game has a gradually ascending learning curve, the latter stages are incredibly challenging. It all combines to provide a decidedly unique and entertaining gameplay experience.
Specific gameplay enhancements for the Game Boy Advance version are relatively scarce. There are a handful of new stages, giant turnips and enlarged versions of various enemies, and an abundance of life-replenishing hearts. More hearts are scattered throughout the levels, and they can be secured by heaving the larger enemies. Also in the Game Boy Advance version are several large coins strewn throughout the stages--secure enough of these coins, and you can unlock a special mode. Finally, the vertical nature of the game's levels and the lower resolution of the Game Boy Advance means that there is quite a bit of vertical scrolling of the screen, a la Super Mario DX for the Game Boy Color. Although the left shoulder button on the Game Boy Advance can control this, the scrolling transition can be disorienting at times.
