Back in 1996, a small hero made a huge impact on the gaming world in the form of his first 3D adventure, Super Mario 64. Now it's 2014 , and looking back on the game, it's amazing how well it still holds up, it feels more immediate and alive then some of the games of this current generation and the previous one, as well as the one before that. I know that pretty much all of Super Mario 64's achievements and innovations have been praised countlessly already, so I'm just going to stick with writing about my own personal feelings and memories of the game. It was 1999, my brother and I's best friend had recently introduced us to the N64, and the first game I can remember being introduced to was Super Mario 64. I remember how much fun we'd have trying to collect all of the power stars, or how we'd sit on the main menu tugging away at Mario's face. I think my fondest memory of Super Mario 64 would have to be are encounters with Bowser, which were always fun and scary at the same time. I remember how every time we'd grab Bowser's tail, twist him in circles, then send him flying across the map, how much tension there was hoping that he'd hit one of the bombs located all around the edges of the battle space. I also remember how exhilarating it was when we'd give Bowser that final goodbye, and would afterwards be greeted by a great big power star. I have plenty of other fond memories of the game, but I guess I'll leave it at that. Before I finish up here though, I'll just say this, Super Mario 64 was, is and always will be a benchmark in videogames... and for myself and gamers alike... it will always hold a special place in our hearts.
