a nostalgic tease

User Rating: 7 | Super Mario 64 DS DS
Super Mario 64DS captures the overall essence of the original and adds some new features. I wasn't too thrilled about starting as Yoshi for the first 5 or so stars, but it ended quickly. there are some extra levels and stars which is cool but the real problem with the game is the controls. though they aren't devastatingly terrible as some might lead you to believe, they were troublesome enough to make me return the game. Especially in the more intricate and harder levels, the controls quite simply don't do the game justice and detract from the overall experience. The graphics are not as good as the original either. Overall, this version made me yearn to play the original, leaving me with an itch I could not scratch. However, despite the control scheme, which takes quite a bit of patient diligence, having Super Mario 64 in your back pocket is never a bad thing. I scored this game a 7 because although Mario 64DS is a playable game, the controls will make you lose a couple hairs in the process.
