The Wii virtual console allows people to access games from years ago that many may not have heard of and that's a great thing. Sometimes though, some games are just so brutally difficult, you are left wondering who in the right mind would make such a monstrosity. Here enters, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts.

There are many versions like Ghost N' Goblins and many iterations and remakes. This is the Super Nintendo version from 1992. The basic tenets of the game are to move around a lot and to have even more patience.

The game starts off with you playing as Arthur, a Knight. His princess is kidnapped and it's up to him to rescue her. You start off with a lance, which you can throw repeatedly and some armor. If you get hit, you get reduced to just underwear. Yup, underwear and then if you get hit again, you turn into a pile of bones. This makes the game brutally difficult because there aren't many checkpoints and there's no way to save your progress. What you do have at your disposal is different weapons like the grenade and the axe. You can also get upgraded armor by surviving long enough and then using magic to hit almost everything on the screen. Unfortunately, the armor doesn't provide extra protection so one hit will send you into half nakedness once again.

Through seven levels of doom, you will get to the end but then you have to go back and start all over again except with a different weapon. It feels really tacked on but the game rewards persistence, or maybe insanity.

In the end, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is a great looking game that plays well. The only real knock against it is the almost unbearable difficulty. This game is what progamers really need to check out. If you're willing to try a game that is almost impossible, give this a try. Otherwise, you might stay way because you might get so angry with this game, you'll need a new classic controller. And what's up with the fact you can't use a wii mote for a two button game?
