Super Dragon Ball Z is fine blend of those old SNES/PSX 2-D DBZ fighters of the past with a 3-D manga-styled look.

User Rating: 8 | Super Dragon Ball Z PS2
Gameplay: The Gameplay in this game is very well done. The mechanics & controls takes some time to get use to, but once you do the game can be very fun. Something truely to enjoy & treasure. There's some strategy involved within the fighting (long range & close range fighting & fighting type characters). Within each character there are different fighting styles (even though some of the button lay-outs are pretty much the same for every character, but that doesn't take away tooo much from the overall experience) & types (long range types & close range types). Overall its fun, once you pick it up. Mastering & developing every character makes it all worth the while. Also unlocking content makes it worth while as well.

Graphics: I love the style they took with this game. Any fan of the manga will truely appreciate its style (as Toriyama-sensei has). Sure, it doesn't match up to the style of the likes of "Dragon Ball Z 3" (and Sparking!....I guess), but it being an homage to the original source material is enough for me to give it a very good rating. The only bad thing about is it can glitchy at rare times & even slow down at bit during gameplay, but it doesn't occur too much & it doesn't ruin the experience. Sound: I like the music a lot as well. It's a nice departure from the" Dragon Ball Z" PS2 game's music (Yamamoto keep doing what you do!! Making good Dragon Ball music!!....err you too Kageyama!!...... Mr. Kikuchi can take a rest if he wants...poor old man....wait they're all old!!....oh well) . I like most of the "chinese & nostalgia" feel from the music if you know what I mean. Overall it's very appropiate music for a game that's an arcade port .

Final Thoughts: After reading much of the general criticism from the likes of IGN & even here from the people at Gamespot. I generally disagree much with what Mr. Davis said concerning the game not having fan favorites such Broly?! (He's not even a character in the manga!!). Either way enough of my fanboy rants.....However I do agree that the game does not have the flash & appeal from other games, but it's very understandable for a game that's based on the manga, heavily relies on gameplay, & made by a first timer developer (Crafts & Miester). In the end: GET THIS GAME (eventually). Even if you don't play it that much, It's a game worth supporting (as a forum member has said & posted yesterday) & a developer worth supporting as well. Much thought was put into this game (strategic & style wise). It may not introduce nothing new to the tables for 2-D/3-D fighting games, but the gameplay is something that still works well from 20 years ago. I applaud you Mr. Funamizu for giving us a game with nostalgic value (both gameplay & style wise) & an intelligent, yet simple, intuitive design & setup from 20 years ago that still works well even with some additions....(Too bad some fanboys don't appreciate it that much....but oh well). Mr. Davis (from Gamespot if you haven't caught on) has mentioned this game as being a "compromise". A very good compromise at that!!! -S-Biz ( True Dragon Ball Fan & Hardcore Gamer)
