A brilliant remake of an iconic game

Konami is responsible for many great series, but I think Castlevania rises above them all. NO other game has transcended the side-scrolling genre such as the Castlevania. The fantastic music, memorable bosses, great difficulty, and quality graphics. When it first appeared on the NES, it rocked the gaming world. Super Castlevania IV is an enhanced remake of that same game, and it manages to surpass it. Konami gave it an overhaul, with upgraded music, beautiful graphics, and more content. This game also had SNES mode 7 technology, which means it has simple texture-mapping, enabling the backgrounds to be rotated and scaled. This game is an audio/visual masterpiece, but how does the gameplay hold up?

The answer is very well. Anyone who's a fan of the GBA and DS installments knows this. It's a time-tested, deep mix of strategy and action that can be blisteringly difficult at times. You can't just run around flailing your whip, you have to THINK of where and when to attack. This is especially true in the memorable boss encounters, which are satisfying throughout. There's also many traps and obstacles that await you, making this game a test of mind and reflexes. Theres also several weapons you can pick up, each with their own strengths.

Overall, this is THE BEST single-player experience on the Virtual Console yet. For $8, that's pretty damn good. I highly recommend picking up a Classic Controller, because I felt the GameCube controller to be too cumbersome for a SNES game. Don't be shy to spend some wii points on this whip-cracking masterpiece.
