A mediocre, very strange journey.

Gameplay: Super Bonk is a not-so-well-known side scrolling platformer made in 1994 by Hudson Soft for the Super Nintendo. You are a dude with a huge bald head so I naturally thought you would get to battering-ram a lot of stuff, but unfortunately that's not really the case in this game. Bonk moves at a slow speed, and there's actually not a lot of hard hitting bonk action which is surprising. This game threw me off because it's more about jumping around and turning into weird creatures than it is about head-butting. Super Bonk is also very unique and inventive. He turns into a wide variety of very odd forms - such as a crab, a mutated dinosaur bird, and a mutated blood vessel popping maniac. In this game you also get power-ups which turn Bonk enormous and/or tiny, ala Alice in Wonderland. Level designs are again strange but inventive. Some go left to right, others take place in the water, some go vertically upwards into the trees, and some even take place inside a creature's body.
7/10.

Graphics: Very strong graphically, fun to look at. Character sprites vary in size but mostly are medium-large and quite well defined. Enemies are easy to distinguish and very strange.
9/10.

Audio: Nothing memorable. When I can barely even remember the music I know it's neither annoying nor awesome. It's mostly peaceful, pleasant sounding little tunes though. The sound effects are just okay.
7/10.

Controls: Nothing to complain about. Jumping is easy enough to control where he lands. Attacking the enemies is almost too easy and forgiving. Pretty solid controls but nothing to write home about either.
7/10.

Pros: Fun/cute graphics. Very unique.

Cons: Short and slow gameplay.

Overall: Super Bonk does a lot of things well, but does nothing great. The best part of the game is the graphics by far, followed by the unique size-changing effect. That being said this is an average platformer for the SNES considering the other amazing choices out there. It's just kind of strange and slow-paced for me. I think it could have been a lot more exciting if powerful, earth crushing BONKS were more of an emphasis in the game. Overall this is fun to play but there's better games out there too. If you love platformers in general you probably won't be too disappointed in Super Bonk.
