Isn't it kind of clumsy for a crossover to have two games at one time?

I made a similar thread on the Tekken X Street Fighter board, but seeing as actual commercials have been released for this, there's a little more to address.

A crossover is a delicate thing to market. In contrast to other games, it's not just about the game, it's about the crossover experience. And it might be a little weird for there to be two games crossing over the same thing, despite the game mechanics being different.

"Worlds Collide is the tagline for this game. That's the premise they're serving up for this game. This is the game where the worlds of Street Fighter and Tekken collide. So what purpose does Tekken X Street Fighter serve? It serves no purpose except to also include the other kind of gameplay that wasn't included in the first game. But people who are there for the crossover? They don't really care about that. In fact, I'm willing to wager that once Tekken X Street Fighter is released, Joe Casualgamer will get the two mixed up at his local Best Buy.

Why? Because he wants to buy that one game where Street Fighter and Tekken fight each other. That's what a crossover is for, right?

I did add, however, that there's a good amount of years between Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter. So the Tekken X Street Fighter game feels... kinda like a sequel, which is legit and isn't forced or anything. It could easily be marketed with the feel of a sequel. Sequels are fine.

ITT: Person who doesn't like Tekken, and assumes that even though people wanted to play Heihachi in Street Fighter, that there are no people who want to play as Chun-Li in Tekken.

Huh? But it's not about playing as Street Fighters in Tekken, or Tekken characters in Street Fighter, or at least that's not what crossovers normally are. It's both sides mixed together in one game.

Back when the CAPCOMvsSNK games were put out, the same thing happened there, except even more so. Both CAPCOM and SNK ended up putting out two crossover fighting games each. And it was all just fine.

I completely disagree. Two games is the absolute PERFECT way to do a crossover. Because then you get one game done in each companies style, and you get to see Tekken characters done in an SF style, and SF charatcers done in a Tekken style.

But that's not what a crossover is for. Or at least, that's not what people expect of a crossover. When you mix two colors, you only get one color.

As for Capcom and SNK, there was a decent amount of time between each game. Plus from then on, all SNK released were those Card Fighter games. Which is different enough in genre to not be weird.

If you're there for the two gameplay styles, fine. But that's not really what a crossover is, by common definition. You're there to see Heihachi fight Chun-Li. It's about the characters crossing over, not the two game design styles.

No; aside from Card-Fighter DS, first you got SNKvsCAPCOM for the NGPC, and then after the original two Card-Fighter games were released, (we never got the second one,) then we got SNKvsCAPCOM Chaos in 2003.

Chances are that TxSF won't even be released until mid-late 2013. So SFxT will be "old" by then.

So what do all the Tekken fans do who hate Street Fighter's gameplay but like the characters?

I'm not saying Street Fighter X Tekken is better or anything, I'm just picking that one because it's available now. Because it's not about the Street Fighter gameplay. It's about the crossover. I'm here to play as Heihachi and fight Chun-Li. Not play as Heihachi in a 2D sidescroller fighter. That's what I'll be doing, but that doesn't matter.

People get Smash games because of the premise of Nintendo people fighting each other. Not because it's a casual brawler that anyone can pick up and play. It is that, and that's an okay thing, but the major MAJOR thing people care about, is that it's Mario and Sonic in one game.

You can't have a cross over of two different style games unless you make two games, otherwise there wouldn't be a cross over as each side wouldn't budge on who got to make it their style. Also it covers both fan bases. There are some tekken players who won't buy SFxT and some who will. Just like how there will be some street fighter players who won't buy TxSF and some will.

But the only way this could slightly harm their profits from a cross over is if they released it at the same time. Which have they have not so I don't see what you're talking about op since TxSF isn't coming out this year. We haven't even gotten any details on it as they've been letting SFxT come out. They understand the business model better then some random forum goer.

Also, TxSF will have a different roster. So chances are that some fights you wanted to see in this but didn't may happen in TxSF.

What if you wanted to see Lee vs Juri? Anna and Nina vs Cammy and Chun-Li? TxSF may give us those chances.

There's plenty of reasons to get them both. TxSF comes out in a couple years. It will have completely different characters. It will have completely different characters.

Hell, it's like saying "You already bought Street Fighter 4, why would you buy Tekken 6?"

Joe Casualgamer doesn't normally play fighting games, and thus wouldn't care that Street Fighter and Tekken are going at it.
Joe Casualgamer might accidentally buy MvC3 instead of UMvC3, though.

But it's not about hosting styles, Keyes, it's about hosting characters. That's ALL that matters, the characters meeting up.

And Eurashal, if both games have different rosters, why not just make one game with both rosters combined? If having different rosters is a way to get people to buy both games, that's kind of a cheap trick.

Robert Soopa, that's what I said in my second post. By the time Tekken X Street Fighter is released, Street Fighter X Tekken will be old. So Tekken X Street Fighter is like the sequel. But I wouldn't say it's Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6, I'd say it's like MvC2 and MvC3.

Also, Joe Casualgamer does play fighting games a lot, it's just that he doesn't follow gaming news or care about play styles. He's in it so that his favorite characters can fight. He doesn't care where they fight, he just cares that they're all in one place and fighting.

    Only Mortal Kombat.
  • Mar 7, 2012 7:09 am GMT
But Joe Casualgamer knows of and enjoys crossovers, Mortal Kombat has only had two crossover events in recent memory.

He plays Marvel vs. Capcom, and enjoys fighting as Wolverine against Capcom fighters.

No. It's SF4 and T6 whether you like it or not. One is a Street Fighter game (SFxT) and one is a Tekken game (TxSF). As far as I know, it hasn't even been announced to be a team game yet. They're two COMPLETELY different games with similar names. Just because they might share some of the same roster doesn't mean they're as similar as you would like to believe. The MvC2 and MvC3 analogy doesn't make a lick of sense because those two games shared the exact same style of everything, just upgrade whereas again, SFxT and TxSF will be entirely different games.

And to say "Joecasualgamer" doesn't acknowledge the difference in gameplay is an insult to casual gamers. Just because they're not hardcore fighting game enthusiasts doesn't mean they can't prefer Tekken's style to Street Fighter's or vice versa.
