- Dec 28, 2012 8:54 am GMTA metroidvania. Make it an XBLA/PSN.Wiishop/3DS/Vita store title. A buddy of mine made mockups:
http://worldsworstdetective.deviantart.com/art/Mega-Man-20XX-342122946
This. He later admitted that 7 or 8 spritestyle would work better for level designs but... yeah. This. This'd sell like hotcakes. The story he had in mind was one to bridge 9 & X, by the by. The idea was such that the bad ending was that Megaman kills Wily, wherein the good ending, you get stopped by Zero's activation, and go back through another quest [ala SotN reverse castle] to get ready to face him.
It'd be sublime.

These are like, third dimension glasses, you know? They don't really work, though because I feel like I'm still seeing stuff in whatever dimension we live in. - Dec 28, 2012 9:11 am GMTOr they could actually make another Mega man game without scrapping It.
Or make Legends 3, that can fix everything, ever, and cleanse them of their sins.

Capcom with some sequels with generic storylines, simply to pray they can at least get the gameplay right.
X8 wouldn't have even been that bad, if they'd simply made more than like, what? Four levels that were actually Mega Man-like?
Think about it. The ice stage was all on a motorcycle, the stage against the Manowar was all on a jet thingy, Burn Rooster's stage was almost completely just jumping from platform to platform, Trilobyte forces you to run away from the mechanaloid, and Optic Sunflower's stage is simply killing enemies under a time limit.
I would argue it was LESS fun than X7, but X7 was pretty garbage as well.

The bike level was like Overdrive Ostrich's level in X 3 or Jet Stingray's level in X 4.
Jumping platform to platform while you are being chase up the screen by lava is like Flame Stag's level in X 2, the part after final Sigma in X 3, and in some ways like the fight with Phoenix in X 5. I think one of the Gate stages in X 6 did this too.
Running away from a mechanaloid is like the T-Rex in whatever stage it was in MM7, the intro stage in X 4, Duff McWhalen's stage in X 5, Infinity Mijinion's stage in X 6.
Killing enemies with a time limit has happened before, too I think. I can't think of anything off of the top of my head, but I know that there were stages in past games where you had to kill enemies in a certain amount of time to escape a room or you were killed.
Maybe you should play some of the older games before you start complaining.

It's easy to get the wrong impression due to all the PR Inafune's done, but he's never directed or written the story for any Mega Man game.

Didn't he say that he oversaw all of them up until X6, and that X6 upset him because he perfectly set up X leading into Zero?

He wouldn't be involved in the development of another Mega Man title until Mega Man 9. In interviews from the time MM9 was released, Inafune says it was fun to actually work on a Mega Man game again after all those years.
You see, design staff at major companies can't just decide what game they'll make. That's up to producers and other executives who green light and budget projects. Producers also do PR while the developers are busy making the game.
Between X3 and MM9, Inafune's job was a producer on the business side of Capcom, not designing games. The totality of his involvement in Mega Man Zero was authorizing Inti to develop a series about Zero. Inafune couldn't even have known what Inti would come up with for the story and gameplay, so it certainly wasn't part of some master plan of his. With Inti working on Zero, Inafune didn't intend to produce any more X games, but other Capcom executives felt differently, and Inti changed their plot somewhat to accommodate.

I've always wanted to see the Megaman series make a game in the vein of Super Mario World.
Like a map where each world has 4 or 5 levels with a castle that has a Robot Master in it (instead of a Koopaling) with 8 castles and finally the battle with Wily, as well as a secret world?
I would buy that. Twice.

This so much
As much as I respect the man, Inafune isn't nearly as necessary to this franchise as people think.

I wouldn't call them terrible, but I've never been a huge fan of them. The point wasn't that they were good, just that it wasn't some new foreign concept to the series.

I remember thinking that they were cool as a kid, but I also remember seriously struggling to get all of the energy things in the squid's stage in X5.

\m/ - Dec 30, 2012 3:28 am GMTThe bike stage in X8 was compared to Overdrive Ostrich here, and that's actually the best comparison for the opposite argument. OO's level is designed around the Ride Chaser, but the vehicle is 100% optional like any regular Ride Armor. In X8, you are forced to use the bike.
The problem with X8 is that the stage gimmicks were all thrown in your face. It's one thing being chased by the Mecha Dragon in MM2 for like 10 seconds, and it's a whole other thing being chased by a huge robot for the entire stage.
It's true that many levels in the series were auto-scrollers, the problem is when that's the rule and not just one part meant to change the pace a bit... IMO, Jet Stingray worked really well in that sense. But 5 of the 13 stages in X8 are auto-scrollers (Central White, Dynasty, Inferno, Metal Valley, Jakob).
The funny thing about X8 is that the powers are so well done and strategic that there's like 3 or 4 real solid boss orders. Too bad there's not a lot of places to use them.
