OPENING THOUGHTS: Had I reviewed this game when I first played it, it would have scored a 10.0. The gameplay was great at the time, but after playing the new Metal Gear Solid games, it has some flaws in the shooting mechanism. The graphics, today, are dated, but at the time were amazing. The sound remains top tier, one of the best sounding games out there. MGS is worth every penny you spend on it; I have played this game the entire way through over 5 times, by far the game with the best value I have ever played. The game is truly revolutionary, and got me into the MGS series, which has become my favorite game franchise to date.
AUDIO/VISUAL: From the moment the game starts the sound and visuals draw you in. The voice acting is great; each actor brought the character to life, and forces the player to feel the emotion of the character. The music is just as good as any other game, on par with final fantasy games of the time. The guns sounds great and unique, explosions sound real and have direction to them, and footsteps were great. It was one of the first games to really utilize directional sounds, so it immersed you into the game even more. The visuals are just as good as the sound. I watch the cutscenes today and am still blown away. The in game graphics, while cannot compare with the playstation 3, are amazing for the time. The colors, textures, character design, special effects are all amazing.
CHARACTERS: The characters are deep, engaging, and developed throughout the game. Every character in the game has their own fully developed back story, creating a rich background developing the character into who they are in the game, as well as giving them motives for their actions. The characters are not just bad or good, it is not black and white as there is a large gray area of conflict for each character. The traditional "hero" and "villain" are thrown out the window, as nearly every character has redeeming as well as damning qualities. These characters do not exist within a bubble either; their interactions with each other create a real connection with the player. Not only are you drawn in as the main character, Solid Snake, but you feel compassion, hatred, and a full range of other emotions towards the secondary, support characters.
GAMEPLAY: Once you start playing the game, you cannot stop. I remember the experience I had first playing the game, having rented it, I could not put it down. I immediately went out and bought the game after renting it twice and having beaten the game when renting it (I probably should have just bought it to begin with, but I was young HA). Everything about the game draws you into it. The gameplay is great, allowing you to play your style. Although it is meant to be an espionage game, it gives you the opportunity to play your style; you can kill everyone or try to not be noticed by anyone. The shooting mechanics are definitely dated as it is nearly all auto-aiming, but given the limitations of the playstation one, it was amazing for the time. At the time the shooting mechanism seemed really good, but with the new iterations of the game, problems do arise. Since there is no first person or over the shoulder, you are very dependant on the help from the auto aim. Also, the camera angles do not give the player the ability to shoot enemies that are farther than 20 ft. in front of you, as you are unable to see them on the screen. However, as an espionage game, I give it the benefit of the doubt trying to force people to sneak around more. That being said, the game does still offer options in gameplay. The player, throughout the game, can defeat bosses in different ways, take different paths, get new items, and use different items and weapons throughout the game. The variety of gameplay is great. The AI for the time was amazing too, while enemies simply kept pouring out and would just run after you, they recognized footsteps and noises and had different alert levels. This allows for a great gaming experience.
STORY: The story, for me, is the best part. Not only is the story engaging for the game, but it speaks to the player's life. It has many deep themes, similar to a classic novel, which a player can take with them into their life. Hideo Kojima developed a great story about love, war, and the individual. The story makes the player think, presenting conflicts of good and evil, love and hate, friends and enemies, and can affect the player’s perception of not only the game, but the world around them. The story stands the test of time, as applicable today as it was when the game was released.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This game has everything, if you haven’t played it there is no better time then now. It will barely cost you anything, and it is an instant classic that will be in your library forever. I cannot stress enough how great this game is; it is a must have for every gamer. It not only created the third person, espionage game genre, but is a revolutionary game in every sense of the word: story, music, visual, gameplay, etc. Get this game now, you will not regret it!
