Quality MOBA-style game that provides balanced and strategic gameplay with many new ideas

User Rating: 9.5 | Stellar Impact PC
Since the creation of DotA, the MOBA genre has expanded into its own subcategory of real-time strategy games. Stellar Impact borrows many aspects of those types of games, but there is also a great deal of original content to it. The game is developed by an French indie studio called Tindalos Interactive. There are only a handful of programmers dedicated to the game, but there you would not know it from seeing the finished product.

Given the limitations of the genre and the developing resources, the visuals of SI are impressive. Most MOBA games are associated with a forest/jungle environment where trees and rivers make up the landscape. Stellar Impact takes place in an outer space setting complete with asteroid fields, stars, planets, and other cosmic entities. Graphics are not the highest concern for a strategy game, but the game still offers quality textures on its ships.

The gameplay of Stellar Impact can match and surpass the top MOBA games out now. The defining feature of the game is its movement system. Instead of a standard click and go system, the game takes momentum and turning into account. Maneuvering becomes a central strategic part of the game that can win or lose firefights. The rest of the gameplay stacks up to the competition as well. Combat is done both through aiming the ships turrets at enemies and using four skills, of a possible 32, as selected by the player. Balancing is an important part of any multiplayer game, and the devs have found ways to offer a ton of ship customization while also giving every available tactic strengths and weaknesses.

A high point for SI is its variety and customization. There are currently eight ship types available, with two more to be released in the near future. Each one can be used in many variations and roles to help the team. Smaller ships are more agile and good for controlling the many control points on the map, but are also more fragile and can't provide as much damage output. Large ships are harder to maneuver but require a lot of focused fire to bring down. DLC ships also provide take more specific roles in matches. Finding the best build to fit with your teammates is an important yet difficult task, as there are so many ways to play each ship.

There are currently two gametypes, Conquest and Battlefield. Conquest is the standard team fight where the goal is to gain control of the arena and destroy the enemy's base. Battlefield is a stripped down team deathmatch where killing enemies and staying alive are the primary objectives. At this point, there are ten Conquest maps and four Battlefield maps.

Stellar Impact is a strategy game that sets itself apart from its competitors. Unfortunately, up to this point it has gotten very little recognition and its player base has dwindled. However, the game will be released on Steam in the extremely near future and it is expected that the game will burst onto the gaming scene. The developers and publishers are continuously working to improve and market Stellar Impact to get the product to as many gamers as possible. After playing it for many months, I can attest that there is no better MOBA on the market than Stellar Impact.
