Mediocre SP; Good Playground For Co-op

User Rating: 7 | State of Decay 2 PC

After 8 or so hours, there clearly isn't much more to it, and I feel like I can offer a personal opinion SoD2.

If it was a SP only game I'd probably give SoD2 a 6/10 (a real "fair" rating, not a 6=trash like many on the interwebs would say).

  • The graphics are ok; not great.
  • The base building is too restrictive.
  • The "narrative" is sufficient to keep sending you out on looting missions, nothing more.
    • If this game had some kind of impactful story - a little Walking Dead drama and some exciting background, it would be elevated to new heights. Truly. I'm not talking 10 minute cinematics. The core game could be virtually the same, but if it had a quality, unintrusive narrative scaffold... Missed opportunity.
  • Overall, the gameplay loop is functional, but wears thin really fast. I agree with the GS reviewer that your party dynamics are really superficial.

However, I would give it a 7/10, because it isn't a SP-only game. Playing the same game with good friends in co-op helps a lot. Although I was initially very disappointed by the limitations in their MP implementation, it's really not so bad in practice. And the fact is, the thin and uninspiring gameplay loop makes for a very good sandbox to get some friends on voice chat and just goof around. I have had a lot of good old fashioned fun with my buds, and got my money's worth out of it already.

As far as bugs and performance issues go, I did not encounter many on PC. The insane launch-in-the-air-with-a-tap cars thing is pervasive. Doors do sometimes appear open when they are not. My friends had to sign off and on a couple of times because they couldn't see/access the storage locker.

I found performance to be quite smooth on an i5 6500 and GTX970 (so, not mindblowing hardware)
