Very good 2D space sim with a good community and good gameplay, but the graphics and sound are somewhat lacking.

Starport GE takes a while to get into, but the simple gameplay, easy to use Starpedia and friendly community make the playing and learning time enjoyable and fun.
The stunning complexity is truly a wonder to behold, each piece interlocking to form a greater picture, which in turn blends in with others to form a true masterpiece.
The game gives players a lot of freedom and variety. Think Freelancer, but without the graphics or sound. You can travel a massive galaxy to be...anything, really. Merchant, pirate, colonist, taxi-person...even deliver resources to other players. In reality most players are a combination of the above, and few choose to specialise in one specific area.
Combat in Starport brings back memories of the old Asteroid games. You spin around, fly about, and shoot. However, different ships have their own different shield capacities, energy regenerations, handling and special weapons. Shields are almost like bricks on top of your ship, they're fairly cheap (only 20 credits each), and when they run out you die. The kicker is that they don't regenerate and some ships can carry up to 16000 of them.
The really good thing is that the game is totally free, except for the time used up and potentially making you lose your eyesight. You really should at least try this game. You have nothing to lose by trying it, and there's a lot to gain from playing.
