Star Wolves 3 is frustrating, at times infuriating, with a very steep difficulty curve.
Honestly, I can't think of anything positive to say about this game. It is extremely linear, progression effectively relies on trial and error, because the quests do not follow any sort of discernible logic. Put a toe out of line from where the developers wanted you to go, and they punish you with instant death. The space battles are intriguing, but require a ridiculous level of micromanagement for you to be effective and even then the slightest error will cost you your ship and it's game over. The frequency that the game forces you into these situations makes it a real nuisance and you'll have to save every couple of minutes if you don't want to be repeating large sections of the game.
The translation for this game is also pretty lacking, and a lot of the problems with not knowing what to do with the quests and such are probably effected by this, but imo the game also just suffers from poor quest design. Quests will present you with a variety of alternate options, seemingly offering you a choice of how to complete a given quest. More often than not this is only an illusion of choice, and picking the "wrong" string of dialogue options in a quest will end up with you looking at the game over screen.
I really like the concept of this game, but for me it just completely failed to deliver an enjoyable gaming experience. I'm not usually one to rage over games, but this one poked and prodded me with enough annoyances that it began to really frustrate and annoy me, and that's when I stopped playing.
There are a couple of mods out there, but they really don't do enough to fix all the things that are broken in this game. And to be honest, a few of the majors mods are pretty sloppy and don't sync in with the game very well anyway.
Only buy this game if you're a masochist!
