Daniel Erickson tells Giancarlo Varanini all about the space combat in Star Wars: The Old Republic.
If ur planing to get this I suggest becoming a sith there the best they rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I soooo wanna be sith, i just hope you dont choose the sith class at the start, i hope you can start as a jedi and move into sith. + if you get to name your own ship, its defenately gonna be called...... Working on title... but it will be good. I was once a fantic of star wars, then i was off star wars, and now listening to the jedi theme and thinking of all the planets and awesome sith/jedi (Revan and Bastila all de way ) made me become a fanatic again :)
Hmmm tunnel flying. Can't say its what I expected. Optimism tells me to hope they throw alot of asteriods for me to dodge. I really hope they do stuff like that.
People on this site are seriously nieve gamers. Look, the game isn't even out yet and already you are making predictions about it about how bad it's going to be or how you are dissapointed about the gameplay, or even treating like the game is going to be the second comming of jesus! I'm so sick of hearing all the whiners complain, and the fanboi's treat it like it's going to be the second comming of jesus. It's a game, and it's a MMORPG with voice overs and a storyline. That is all we know right now. So stop making assumptions about the game, and making comments to others and giving them false information about the game. Because in reality this game like all MMO on release day are not what you make them out to be, then you will be dissapointed.
fast paced tunnle shooter, or STO online's 'They told me this ship was fast.' for fighter craft, yes, i would prefer the tunnle shooter or your going to need a joystick to make any decent impact or play even with those who do. otherwise, your stiffed with a Keyboard that refuses any inputs if more than two key's are pressed at a time. Captial ship combat, those that don't move so fast. would benifit from an open arena like in Star Trek Online.
Ok first of all, you can't really say how bad some of the things are in this game. ex. the space combat- ok well if you watched the video you don't have to do space combat, so quit your whining. This is a MMO so having a tunnel shooter space combat system won't be to bad. if anything it will let you enjoy the stunning visuals while you are flying around. And there is still over half a year of them developing and finishing the game and fixing everything. As of right now most of what they are showing are the building blocks, the structure of what the game will be. And since Bioware is developing this it will be hands down a great game. Maybe not necessarily a WOW killer but will definitely be story driven unlike WOW with all the lame grinding go kill 6 of those and bring me 10 of these. If your a true star wars fan then you will love this game none the less.
I've got to say I'm a bit dissapointed in Bioware when it comes to Space Combat. This looks way to "raily", if you like. @Deadeye233 Seriously? This looks good, but hey, ever heard of Age of Conan? AOC didn't quite make it to the top, but the graphics were indeed amazing.
A tunnel shooter... I can't believe they're making space combat in a Star Wars MMO a stinking TUNNEL SHOOTER.... Good going, BioWare; you've set game design back 35 years. Let ME fly MY ship!
What would be cool is if they did the point a to point b, but still allowed you to have complete control over your ship instead of rails. It would feel more like a space sim like freespace or freelancer. That would be sweet.
I dont even like mmorpg and this game looks great. Im also really impressed with the screenshots and videos. Ive never seen a mmorpg with such great graphics!! hope it lives up to KOTOR
@GamerJedi29 yes I realize this but what i was getting at was the fact that even the original movies(witch are rated pg) have at many times been a little more geared towards adults, and concidering the age of the average gamer I would think that most would agree with my point.
Too early to tell, but i wouldn't be terribly surprised to see a "WHAT ? Is that all there is ?"-debate with regard to space combat come 2011. For now i'll chose to have faith in Bioware, but i wonder. It sure doesn't look (or sound) like it's going to be "Freelancer" or "X-Wing" style combat fer sure.
Space combat looks intense... But the on rails is gonna be no fun if you can't randomly go HEY! look a Star Destroyer! Lets land inside and blow it up on foot! I still want that freedom. But not where you fly through empty space just farming on helpless pirates. I like the idea of point a- point b but not if it means kill what they want you to kill, Go where they want you to go
I don't mind the graphics, but the guys in all their in-game footage all run like pansies. I don't want to be a Sith Lord running like that! Still a ways to go though, so I'm not stressed. BioWare is one of those few companies I have complete trust in to make a great game. Space combat looks awesome, and even if it's "on rails", looks pretty darn fantastic to me.
hmm cant say the grathics are very good shame cos i think it may kill this game for me T.T
i know this is still a long way before being completed, and a star wars mmo really sounds nice, but i don't like the animations, and the combat seems really dull at this point
Space combat looks beautiful, but I'm just not sure how much I'm going to like it. I know this topic can go both ways, but for me personally, I loved JTL. Free roam was so much fun. The thing that I don't quite get is that their target audience is supposedly people who want simple games. We're not consoles gamers...so why make it that simple. We like games that are a little more complex and make you think as opposed to just mashing 2 or 3 buttons the entire time.
The space combat does look fun but then again...it's on the rails I was really hoping to have some free form of space travel or atleast be able to travel from planet to planet by myself though not enough info to think of.
i hope this isn't one of their dumb mini games. But is actually fun. The game is going to be awsome either way though.
The space combat sort of reminds of me the Starfox games. I just hope it's not too simplistic either.
hope space combat isnt goin to be too simplistic. i dont like the fact that games are goin too much towards an arcade or casual direction, if space combat is optional because they dont want to scare off the kotor players why not be as x-wing series where you could really dig in, thats what an mmo should be. in an x-wing-alliance-style feature you could realise pvp and listen: an star wars mmo without space combat pvp would be a great disappointment for gamers and fans.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_aGB4q9uas Interviewer: "Are there space battles for everyone? Whoever joins it will be competing? Or has it got a pvp component also?" Greg: "We haven't really discussed anything like that. I think that what you're talking about in terms of pvp in space is not something we're currently planning.....
@Katra Well, the whole point of smuggling goods is that there are people in the way that don't want you smuggling said goods. So I would imagine that flying right by them and announcing that I'm there and ready to be searched would probably be a bad idea.
The space combat looks right on. But all I really want is to be able to travel from planet to planet in space. Best quote from the interview "The force is not magic" Unlike what The Force Unleashed II looks like.
@Drakken_Raed This game doesn;t come out till next spring! How could you possibly know that for sure? Stop being such a negative nancy.
@CHECKTHISTA dude thats just the cinimatic trailer for the old republic for E3, why would that even be in the old republic booth
@valdorin6966 yeah that would be really cool but youve got to take into acount that it isnt just adults that play theses, theyre trying to make it so everyone can play. It doesnt really make a difference to me KOTOR didnt have that and thats one of my fav games.
@Drakken_Raed STOP COMPLAINING, damn they didnt even have to put this in the game just be happy they did
If you like soap on a rope, then you'll love playing that tunnel shooter on a leash. That's all it is, and there will be no pvp in space.
@ah20s I to tire of the kiddy version of star wars. with light sabers and a huge galaxy to span, i would like to see some more realistic combat effects( blaster holes and limbs flying off in all directions) as a toggleble feature. also some more adult oreinted story. however i am happy with the graphics and the space combat looks amazing, hope it handles like the old rouge squadren game on game cube.
@masterchief80 I think they did try to keep the KOTOR art style....it's just that it's now, what, six years old? There's a natural evolution to art styles based on current gen influences and direction factors. That's probably what's happening here. It's really hard to judge graphics on early builds of a game, especially consider that it's still 6-12 months before this game come out (assuming they stick with the current release schedule). I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that for a while yet. I don't know much about the technical specs of the Mass Effect engine, but I would imagine that it might be prohibitive from a technical standpoint to build an MMO on it. The ME engine is pretty sophisticated and would probably take a fair amount of computing power for it to run not only on their servers (with hundreds of toons and details on screen), but also on the player's computer as well. I'm so excited for a space MMO that doesn't take a flight manual to play. EVE is a good game, but the learning curve is so steep that if you take a break from it, it's really hard to get back into.
Jeez more complaining bout the graphics? Get over it they aren't going to change it to look like Mass Effect 2, they want people who don't have high end systems to play this game so they are staying with these Stylized Graphics and Animation which suits the Old Republic fine.
