As the topic says... can you get the companion via cartel market now or do you still have to do the quest chain before you have access?

HK51 cartel item is the ability to do the quest chain. Therefore you need an unlock to get HK51 either way.

Yeah. You have to do the quest chain once through on a toon and then you can pay [1mil credits per toon] to unlock it on the rest of them. The cartel item is that unlock.

This. I was less than pleased with spending real money to unlock HK only to find I still had to do a damned fetch quest and even then he's useless as a comp. His kit is all Lv50, but at Lv50 you're usually doing PvP and FP stuff rather than solo PvE.

You know you can de-equip him and give him level appropriate stuff before you're 50, right?
HK-51 is pretty freakin' killer at low levels, actually.

Still requires the whole fetch quest thing. Frankly I'd rather use a normal comp if I need ranged DPS.

Well, that's entirely your prerogative. Personally, I prefer that there's a quest, just because it provides a little more content to do. Granted, most of it is re-hashed, to the point I wouldn't want to do it with all my characters (and would be particularly disinterested if I could
only use him with my 50s), but as it is, I like it better than just "pay money, receive companion".

I wouldn't mind doing a quest [e.g. retrieving HK from the crashed ship], but having to spend hours hunting for components isn't a good quest, it's just a timefiller. More content is great, but in hindsight I wouldn't have bothered.
