The greatest Star Wars racer of all time...

User Rating: 8.9 | Star Wars Episode I: Racer N64
When it comes to arcade-style racing and Star Wars, it seemed to be an odd approach, but this game based on the podracing scene from Episode I is definitely the greatest Star Wars racer of all time.

The storyline has no particular path to follow. Basically, you are a podracer that needs to win certain races and events in the galaxy to become the greatest racer of all time. There are plenty of characters to choose from, all with their own design and stats that can be upgraded from the junkshop merchant, as well as buy some new pit droids to repair your vehicle after a long hard race.

The graphics really take advantage of the motion blur effect. As you go faster the scenery will gradually start to semm stretched out, giving you an advance feel that you're going at the speed of light. The tracks also are designed well, and the lighting effects on the different podracers is gorgeous. The characters are also nicely modeled and are presented smoothly.

The soundtrack, of coure, includes different scores and songs from all of the movies. You can also give them a little trash talk, but sometimes, you just need to ram them to be able to get them off your tail.

The gameplay is a little strange and the phjysics take some time to get used to, but once you get the hang of how to turn your speeding deathtrap around the bend of doom, it'll never bother you again. As said earlier, you also need to upgrade your vehicle to be able to turn effeciently and keep up to speed with everyone else, but I get the feeling that if I add a better part to my vehicle or downgrade a part, all of the other racers controlled by the CPU will do the same.

Overall, this game is truly great racer in the Star Wars universe. If you still have your N64 and want to get a better experience that the Bombad Racing game or Revenge, pick this one up, you'll feel a whole lot better.
