A long time ago on a console far, far away…

User Rating: 8 | Star Wars NES
As the first in the series for NES, Star Wars is a classic 2D game following the movie Episode IV: A New Hope. Play as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia as you battle the Empire and try to destroy the Death Star.

The story begins on the planet Tattooine, with Luke battling indigenous creatures and sand people. You’ll have to pilot his landspeeder across the desert, picking up items in your search for your missing droid R2-D2 and the whereabouts of Obi-wan Kenobi. Through Mos Eisley to meet Han Solo, and you’re off in the Millennium Falcon. Rescuing the Princess Leia is a piece of cake, right? Wrong. As with traditional 2D gaming, there are some incredible jumps that require timing and sometimes luck as you traverse the levels of the Death Star.

After reaching Yavin 4, you’ll blast off in an X-wing, to fight hordes of TIE fighters and attempt the miracle shot to end the short reign of the Empire’s superweapon.

Fans of the movie will recognize all of the scenes with sweet nostalgia, as the opportunity is given to participate in the action.

The graphics and sounds are typical for an 80’s game, but the action and story will keep players entertained for hours to come. A must have for any Star Wars collection. * * *
