E3 2012: And the Jedi ain't one.
Star Wars 1313 is one of the major highlights of E3 2012. The spectacular demo not only gave showgoers a glimpse of what the next generation of games will look like, but more importantly, it went a long way toward revealing a concerted effort by the entirety of Lucasfilm, including Industrial Light and Magic, to craft a Star Wars experience that hooks fans, both current and lapsed. We've got five reasons the latter should take notice.
The Original Trilogy
If you've seen the only piece of art released for the game, then you might already know that 1313 takes place in the beloved, original trilogy era as revealed by the Tie Fighters and the Imperial shuttle. But even without the art, the 1313 demo gives a pretty clear indication of the time frame--the clothing and the ship design are all very reminiscent of what we've seen in the movies and other media set against the same period.
Let's face it--Jedi are kind of everywhere at this point. The spiritual figures of the Star Wars universe have long been some of its most popular characters, but so many games focus on their struggles, pitting you as one of the iconic Force-wielding characters. Frankly, we're feeling a little lightsaber fatigue, and most lapsed Star Wars fans probably are too.
What better way to bring Star Wars fans back into the fold than focusing the story around a lesser-known part of the political hub of the Star Wars universe: Coruscant, which also happens to be a planet-wide city with thousands of levels that plunge deep beneath the surface. In fact, 1313 represents a level deep beneath the surface--a place where the Force doesn't exist; the Jedi don't inhabit; and only the most dubious characters reside.
Flamethrowers. Jetpacks. Grappling hooks. Bounty hunters have access to some pretty cool gadgets within the Star Wars universe. Since the focus of 1313 is on the morally questionable figures, LucasArts wants you to experience every facet of their lives, including the cool gadgets and the trouble that comes along with them.
1313 runs on a heavily modified version of the Unreal 3 engine, the same version that powered the impressive Samaritan demo. The game already looks fantastic and showcases the immense talents of Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic special effects studio. The lighting and character models and their animation are all incredibly impressive and serve as a great example of what games could look like when the next generation of consoles arrive.
To be honest the only star wars games that I enjoyed were star wars battlefront 1 & 2 and star wars republic commando. They should make sequels to those.
game is going to be great.........but i will not buy it, simply because it will have no multiplayer.
So this is a "Next-Gen" game? So does that mean we should all just stop buying stuff now because the next generation of consoles is coming out a lot sooner then we thought? I'm not ready to buy a new console and replace everything again. If the transistion is coming that soon (enough to show demos for "next-gen" consoles) then I think I am done. I'm tired of forking over so much money all the time. Yeah for the exponential growth of technology!
Sounds cool, though i dont know whats so great about no jedi. hopefully this will be ported over to the PS3 or something.
Great, a new star wars game for pc that's not a lame mmo but doesn't even have Jedi, lame. still waiting for the next kotor game or other next gen star wars game to blow my mind, guess I'll have to wait. No Jedi?? Really?? Now that's taking a step backwards.
You had me at mature and bounty hunters, but this is a game that I don't mind reading more about, since not much is known about it. Original trilogy, mature, bounty hunters, impressive animations/graphics, those are all things I like hearing about. What with all the focus on the Clone Wars and Expanded Universe, it's nice to see a throwback to the old days. It already seems better than Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, though I didn't play it, because it didn't come to PC.
If already have the 3 Mass Effect, 3 Gears of War and Bionary Domain... What are the best reasons to choose 1313? Gamespot chose reasons for Star Wars fans but what about gaming fans? 1313 seems like a too standard TPS to be exciting, where'x the novelity?
@GreG975 Precisely. Just using standard shooter mechanics and sticking a SW badge on it is not what I would call a product to attract lapsed SW fans. More like a product to milk the last few drops out of a franchise that has been milked to death and back again already. Im not saying the game will be bad, hell I will probably play it, but so far Im not seeing anytyhing new.
@GreG975 star wars world with bounty hunters
and to be honest you can't take this as the only pull you have to wait till the actual information for the game is released
The trailer for this actually bummed me out. It was unfortunate to see that next gen the current trend of "How do you fix something? Remove everything that makes it awesome and turn it into a shooter!!!!!" is going to continue in full force. Still waiting for the next Jedi Knight game.
No force/lightsaber fatigue here!! What I'd really like is "The Force Unleashed 3", but done properly (like the first one, the second one was rubbish).
The only good reason to like this game is bounty hunters imo. The whole 'no jedi thing' is a pretty crappy reason since jedi are purely a Starwars related thing. You don't see any jedi in Startrek or Stargate only pew pew lasers :P
@ratchet200 Actually, the earth humans in Stargate mostly used conventional fire arms, like the P-90.
Oooh there are only 4 reasons here. Can't give you the last one because of the Unreal 3 engine relation.
@Kevin75 They are using a heavily modified version of the Unreal 3 engine , not the standard UDK version .. makes alot of difference ! Programmers re-write alot of codes and apply there own shaders and scripts to change the program to there own custom use
I think any Star Wars game that doesn't involve playing a Jedi or Sith will have to be pretty good to get people interested. Though I would bet on them putting some force weilding character into the story as a minor character or enemy. Will be watching this one and hoping they manage to pull out a decent game.
I just want to explore a Star Wars world. And The Old Republic feels too artificial ): Either a new Battlefront or KOTOR would be good right about now.
I loved Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy. Not really feeling lightsaber fatigue myself at this point. Also, why should i be interested in a third person cover shooter?
Love Star Wars, but any game without Jedi is pointless. I'm not and will never be even remotely "lightsaber fatigued"!!
So glad this doesn't contain Jedi. LOL. Love Jedi but there are many other characters in the SW universe. It's nice to see a game focusing on what goes on outside the spotlight so to speak.
i really don't want to get hyped for a game that i have not seen very much other than 2 min of gameplay i need to see more than just what they have shown to buy that this is the next great star wars game as far as what ive seen it could suck.
@sale985 AHH I see what you did there! And it hasn't been funny since the first time someone said it. So either you have no since of humor and are trying to copy off someone else or your just trying to troll. Either way your a douchebag.
@vault-boy I realy like when i pissed someone of, when is about Star Wars. Becouse it'a bullshit. They still from others to make own game. And don;t tell me that concussive shot it's knot like mass effect. Shut up! And what was that all about a dance revolution in Star Wars, they are insane.
I don't get it. Why hasn't someone made a Star Wars game Deus Ex style? For a bounty hunter game, the two seem perfect for each other.
@Falzonn Do you mean Deus Ex as in the combat/stealth or the RPG elements? Star Wars doesnt have many memorable moments with spies and such. Though, it would be cool.
@ratchet200 If you ever bothered to play SWTOR OR even read the book "Revan", written by the main writer of KOTOR1, you would realize that KOTOR3 would be out of the question. Within the story, its impossible. It would have to be made around the timeframe that SWTOR is.
This game reminds me of Starwars Dark Forces from the 90's. It was a build engine FPS ( Think Doom ) and you were this merc fighting the empire with just blasters.
@Vambran Merc was Kyle Katarn, and considering the impact it had on FPS's, im sure everyone remembers it. Oh and BTW, the sequel gave him the Force.
wait wait. i have much FPS experience and star wars but battlesfront can be great multiplayer experience. well battlefront 3 with new maps weapons characters. inovation is the center. multiplayer is very good in games with low history campain. COD MW have nice campain history and multiplayer.
@ghost688 COD MW have nice campain history and multiplayer.
Sorry, only the fist MW could be considered to have a good campaign. Also, we need to stop milking old franchises, Battlefront was fun as hell but we can't just live in the past, we need to make new franchises with new and interesting ideas. Of course I wouldn't expect someone who thinks MW3 is good to have an open mind to something that's not a sequel :P
