My favourite Star Trek game: Bridge Commander. Excellent game, beside the bad graphics.

I don't think it was J.J. Abrams' fault that this turned out the way it did. The studio just dropped the ball badly, pinning the fact that it's a third person shooter on him is just irresponsible. This could have been an RPG easily, because of all the elements at play in the star trek universe. Going for a third person run and gun game was entirely the developer's fault. And they even had the nerve of actually saying "the most genuine Star Trek experience"... give me a break...

Patch it.

@havocmerc patches that require a major reworking of the entire game and base premise don't ever get made.

I like gun tooting foot soldiers.  Now I have to have it.

What a shame I will still have to buy it for my star trek collection, but I probably just leave it in the wrapper I could have used a good star trek game.

I personally have more problems with the uninspired new Star Trek movies, than with this lame game.

Good Star Trek-Games like Armada, Elite Force or The Fallen were always few and far between, but the shows/movies were far more intelligent and more ingenious (except Nemesis) than this mainstream-action flick Into Darkness.

Just finished the game and i've got to agree. It's uninspired, it's annoying, it has nothing Star Trek about it and someone should be fired for letting this happen.
If you rarely play videogames, maybe, just maybe you'll enjoy it. But no gamer would play this unscathed by the lack of respect.
The wasted opportunity here is unbelievable.
This is not a movie adaptation, this is Star Trek.
And the Gamer and the Trekkie in me agreed to delete this and never play it again.

And that's coming from a non unforgiving hardcore gamer.

What!? Another game adaptation from a movie failing miserably? NAAAAHH

But could you imagine a real proper Star Trek (TOS) game? One where there would be very little shooting, and mostly dealing with a moral issue, while trying in the background to resolve a minor technical problem that is preventing you from just leaving? That would be great.

...or maybe it would be one of those episodes where they discover an alternate Earth.

Disappointed... but not surprised.

I initially thought the game looked quite good... I'm glad I decided to wait for the reviews.

Thank the Goddess for Gamespot!

Ah, but Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (which dates back all the way to 2000!) was also a Star-Trek-themed shooter, and it received a glowing review and an 8.6/10.0 score here at GS.

Most Star Trek fans probably don't mind seeing the Star Trek universe reduced to a shooting gallery (in a game, at least), as long as the shooting is done well!

@Stesilaus Yes. And Voyager fans knew how bad that ship needed an Elite Force like that.

The good thing on this is if you play it on PC, the bug will be fix soon by some nice modders.

@laser00 But sadly, they can't fix sloppy, uninspired and annoying gameplay ;(

@shadgrindk Erm over-reaction much. Boycott the product by not buying it. Sane. "Death and suffering" "to their parents and children as well". Yeah that part is where you lost me and anyone else without any sub-psychotic rage.

"The thing about Star Trek is that it has never been about the action."

True that.  I'm far from a Trekkie, but I do like Star Trek; particularly TNG due to my rose tinted glasses as I remember always waking up excited to watch it with my mum, who IS a Trekkie.  I don't mind the Abrams movie(s) but I was saddened as soon as I saw this was just another shooter.  I really want a modern Star Trek game that *IS* like Star Trek, yeah there should be action in it but it shouldn't be the focus.  In fact, here's a proposition: give the Star Trek license to Bethesda Softworks or someone like them, and make an open world (Open universe?) sandbox RPG with player centric character development where you can explore space, have encounters, find planets and have space adventures.  Y'know, like something that resembles Star Trek.  I KNOW this can be done in talented hands, I KNOW it.  Anyone agree?

I'm deffo glad I skipped this one.

@ChiePet88

Yeah and TNG is the best for sure :)

Sandbox trek game with RPG elements sounds wonderful.

It could have TV episode like side missions that lasted for an hour or two.

You know the type: Going to a new place to do something diplomacy like.. strange things happening, figuring out what the new phenomenon is and stopping it from ruining everything while under gun threat from some semi hostile aliens thinking it's all the federation's fault.

Funny thing is that they get even the action wrong in most (read: all) ST games.

Star Trek has its own style of action ...or had anyway (Damn you Abrams)

Can't say i'm surprised but I've never seen GS giving out this low of a score. I'm sure the game deserves it though.

@ptrpedrohung Watch the review for a PC game called Big Rigs. Its the greatest video review this site has ever done.

@ptrpedrohung I've seen them give out lower scores.  In fact back in the day, there were games that got scores in the One-sies.  If you want to see the games they've scored lowest, go to the review list, then click on Browse Reviews and then click on the "Score" column, the first time it'll list their highest reviewed games of all time.  Click it again, and you'll see their lowest scores.  If you only care about more modern games, you can select specific consoles and do the same thing.

Having played completely through this game on PC, I didn't think it was all THAT bad.  The reviews of this game are making it sound like a polished turd, I can assure you its not.  ALL the reviews either 1. compare mechanics to other games or 2. focus solely on the bugs.  I mean if this game was Battlefield 4 it would have a 9.99 OMGZ! AWSUM! despite all the bugs we all KNOW its going to have, hell BF3 still doesn't have proper hit detection.  Most of these highlights of this "bad" game can all be fixed with a simple patch(s).  Overall I thought the game was beautiful, well scripted, and the story did suck me in.  If you are a fan of the Star Trek franchise or JJ's reincarnation, give this a run through.

@sirshaw1 Not for $50 to $60. When it hits the $9.99 bargain bin in a year or two... MAYBE.

Dermort666

@sirshaw1 The thing is gamers (let alone hardcore gamers), non Star Trek fans  (or even fans) that constantly buy and play games, they find games like this disrespectful.
The casual gamer might enjoy it.

I'm shocked and amazed that this game stinks. I never would have thought it. Why do they even release a game that is broken in everything that it involves. Good thing I'm not into Star Trek. I would love to see a good Iron Man game. That would be awesome but alas it seems it's not possible.

GameBeaten
GameBeaten like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@Vul0 The developers are most likely forced to get this game out the door within the time frame of when the next Star Trek movie is in theaters. They are only given so little time to work on the game.

This was a similar situation with The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which the developers were only given six months to make it.

Saketume
Saketume like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Vul0 It's rushed to make them a buck extra off the movie goers when the new Trek movie premiers in a few days.

They don't care about quality they care about the character likeness to their movie stars and the release date for the new Abrams movie. Which seems to be May 17th according to imdb.

ChiePet88
ChiePet88 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Vul0 Oh, its possible.  They just need to find developers that give a damn, and they should stop caring about tying the games directly with the movies story and release dates.  Let developers with good minds have time to develop a good story and game built around the universe.  I really think maybe after Batman Arkham Origins comes out, Rocksteady should try their hand with another super-hero.  Considering they managed to make two Batman games that broke the series' streak of crap (Though Batman has had more good games than a lot of superheroes... I think he and Spider-Man have got it the luckiest.) and were not just amazing for a licensed game but good enough to be a AAA contender means Rocksteady could do justice to more Super heroes, including perhaps Iron Man.

It honestly kind of surprises me that a lot of companies just half-ass superhero games, you'd think that Superheroes are like... the perfect thing for a video game, be they licensed or original ones.  They should go together like bread and butter, and they at least do when the developers give a rats arse.

I imagine a Star Trek party let down by this videogame with Mark Walton blowing his birthday candles in a Star Trek suit. I suppose the end of the party, Mark would be alone, sad, upset and crying. Well bad games like this can be fun to laugh at.
