So, as a diehard Trekkie, I have been disgusted by some of the attempts at star trek games out there. Until now. Star Trek Conquest is the newest Star Trek Game to be released on ps2. While not the best, it is definitely a step up from its predecessors

This game actually does not feature anyone or any familiar ships from the Star Trek franchise. This thankfully, means no phoned in crappy voice acting by William Shatner. Conquest is a turn based strategy game, like risk, only with the Breen, Federation, Cardassians, and Romulans, and Dominion as playable characters, along with races like the Borg and Xindi as npc enemies. You choose a starting race, which you play for the whole campaign. You are then put on your home planet, given some cash, and left to build your empire. You start off with one ship, from which you build up your fleets. You are allowed 3 fleets of seven ships, ranging from light scouts to heavily armed dreadnoughts. Your goal is to conquer the galaxy by fighting enemy races, destroying their fleets, and destroying the starbases in each system. When you attack a system, you have the options to use a simulation to determine the winner, of fight it out in space battles. The space battles are like a stripped down version of star trek encounters, with the addition of being able to control your fleet in battle. You can also fortify your controlled systems with bases, and build mining facilities to increase your funds. Each race also has a 3 special weapons available to them. Campaigns are short, but the many playable races, fleet compositions, and strategies makes for a near infinite amount of possibilities.

Graphics are pretty good, and the sound design is also up there with good music, and battle sounds.
The campaigns are short, but there are so many possible configurations, that length does not bother me. On top of that, there is also a skirmish mode similar to Encounters to keep you entertained.

This is the first Star Trek Game that I can whole heartedly recommend to trekkies and non trekkies alike. It is simple enough, has good production values, and for $14.99, a bargain price, it is well worth your time. Go buy it. Now
