I bought this game on a whim of curiosity as a Star Trek fan. For what conquest is, its not a bad game. Its not broken. What it offers is pretty straight forward and works pretty well. The only problem is that it isn't much of what one should expect from the caliber of current day gaming.

Take the board game Risk, simplify the strategies, throw in Star Trek species and units, add some limited real-time 3D battles, and you have Star Trek Conquest.

The near entirety of the game takes place on a static 2D map showing familiar ST systems connected by lines. Any activity of the different species is represented by a 2D image of their ships moving between these systems. This first reminded me of a very dull version of the Imperium Galactica games. Battles between fleets seem to be decided by who has the biggest numbers, but there is the option of the 3D battle, where you control your fleet and lets you take tactical control, namely watching your shields, that can turn a lost battle to your advantage.
