One of my favorite games of all time.

User Rating: 9.5 | Star Ocean: The Second Story PS
The good: Story really pulls you in--great characters--reason to play through more than once--item creation/skill system is very rewarding

The bad: Sometimes awkward translation--terrible, but funny, voice acting

When I was thinking of what review I wanted to write next, I was having some trouble deciding. Until I found Star Ocean: the Second Story at a local shop for $17.99. I picked it up and jumped immediately back into one of my favorite games of all time.

Star Ocean: the Second Story is a story about a young man named Claude Kenni, son of Ronixis Kenni from the Japanese only release Star Ocean. Through a series of events Claude sets out on a quest to rid the planet Expel of an evil terror known as the Sorcery Globe, alongside a colorful cast of characters that includes a girl whos not what she seems, a man possessed by not one but TWO dragons, and a girl with a mechanical punching arm. The characters are probably what I love most about this game. In all there are 12 different characters, though you can only see 8 in a given playthrough, giving the game some replay value. To add to that, you must also choose between Claude and Rena as your main character. Although they are together throughout almost the whole game, it is interesting to see different events through Rena's perspective. There is also one character unique to each ones story.

Speaking of the story, I personally love it. It is a nice blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements, and the work together very well. The story is told through the use of text and a few sparse CG scenes, with voice acting being relegated to battles. Which is sometimes a good thing. The voice acting in the game is pretty bad. I don't mind it, because it can be good for a laugh, but sticklers will absolutely hate it. There are only a couple of characters whose voice even matches their looks/personality, and even those arent that great. I will admit though that I love hearing the pint sized genius Leon say "I should join the imperial troops!"

While most consider the story the most integral part to any RPG, it has to have good gameplay to back it up. And this is where Star Ocean really shines. Using a real time, free roaming battle system, the battles in Star Ocean are always exciting. Each fighter has a regular attack (pressing X), but can also be assigned two "Killer Moves". These have a variety of effects, from throwing swords at your enemy to healing your entire party. Then of course you also have your standard mages, who stay on the back lines and sling spells. Very large spells.

In the graphics department, this game doesnt disappoint. While the graphics are understandably old school (this IS a PSone game), the pre-rendered backgrounds are easy on the eyes, even if the sprites are a little outdated for their time.

And I can't say enough about the games soundtrack. There is not a single bad track to be found, from the calm, soothing theme of Arlia, to the orchestral piece of Lacour Castle. It is all very good stuff, and easily one of the best soundtracks ever.

With a possible 80+ endings, a robust skill system, and a level cap of 255, Star Ocean will keep you busy for a long time. I have beaten it twice already and still come back for more. If you find this game for a decent price, buy it. You will not be disappointed.
