Bad vs. Worse.

User Rating: 4 | Spy vs Spy GBC
Spy vs. Spy is an action/tactics game released by Kemco in 1999.The game's a remake of the old, enjoyable NES game. Sounds promising, right? Do not expect anything. Spy vs. Spy is an incredibly crappy game on every front, from gameplay to music. It's not worth spending a single buck on.

Obviously, you play as a Spy. You have missions to complete in 4 different areas: Stealth Jet, Rocket Ship, Speed Boat and Spy Car. Each area contains 8 levels that increase in difficulty. Once you complete a level you can proceed to the next one. The goal of each level is to find the briefcase hidden in the level and collect the 4 items that fit belong to that briefcase. All these items can be found inside furniture (paintings, couches, chairs etc).of the rooms of the level (yes, every mission takes place inside in a building that always looks the same no matter where you are) Once you get all the items you get to the door (watch out for the fake door!) and escape: mission completed. There's a little in-game map to help you in all this. It shows the movements of the enemy spy and displays in which rooms the items are hidden. To increase the difficulty a bit you have an enemy spy to deal with. This enemy has the objective you have: collect all the items. Oh yeah, and when he gets the opportunity he knocks you down which 'kills' you and makes you lose all the items you found so far. Of course you can also attack the enemy spy: set traps (bombs, springs), knife him or hit him with a stick. This all sounds like pretty serious business but in fact it's not. It's a comical, light-hearted game, so you don't really die or come across any gore or filth. Phee-ew. Setting traps, or rather the character's response when you hit the enemy, is pretty fun at first. It's grows boring quickly though since the amount of traps is limited (only four or so) and your character's reaction is always the same.

Apart from the graphics being comical there's not much to say. The game's ugly, even for GBC. Everything looks a bit square. The music doesn't add anything to the game, which makes it bad. Fortunately it doesn't really get on your nerves. Some sound effects are fun at first (your character laughing evilly when you hit your opponent), but it's so repetitive that it grows boring quickly.

Hmm, replay value. Well, It's a little harsh to say "none", but the game gets boring just after a few levels. It's the same thing over and over again. No new things to do, no story, no character development, absolutely nothing. If you've got a friend who's been equally stupid as you and bought this game as well you can at least still face-off in multiplayer mode which is moderately more fun. But needless to say, that's still not much.

This game is just really bad. You shouldn't even bother renting it, not to even speak of buying. Be stubborn and get disappointed.
