# Optimal Space Stage colony layout

#1 Posted by MortimerV -
My friend, Purple Llama, made a program to calculate the best arrangement for Spore colonies in the space stage. I've gone for 2 happiness and +132 spice/minute with my colonies, but you can get up to -6 happiness and +180 spice/minute if you really want (maybe combine it with a happiness booster)

Anyways! What follows is mostly from her site, with a little modification to remove the hand-drawn graphic she used:

The following is a large table full of the optimal arrangements of buildings in a Spore colony, going from highest possible profit to highest possible happiness.

The arrangements are used as follows: each digit of the twelve digit number represents a space on the colony map. 0 is empty, 1 is a house, 2 is entertainment, and 3 is a factory.
Begin laying your colony from the dead-end spot and continue clockwise around it:

Enjoy! I painstakingly sifted through 4^11 (=4,194,304) sets of values to get these numbers! (or maybe I felt like coding something and wrote a program to do it. either way.)

All credit to Purple Llama, who didn't want me to link to her site for bandwidth concerns. She gives full permission to use this as you feel like it, she just wants the information out there. Thanks, Purple!

Might be better to just....post a picture.

yea.. this is kind of hard to read.

Looks interesting, but without a picture I'm not going to even try to decipher this. If bandwidth is an issue, upload the picture to imageshack. Or printscreen the whole page and upload the .png to imageshack.

What you're doing now is... madness.

All right, let me give it another try. Instead of numbers, I've given the layouts letters.

H = House
F = Factory
E = Entertainment
N = Nothing (leave it empty)

For applying these letters into the game, start at 1 on the following image, and follow it around: http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/1974/colonylayoutxv5.jpg

Here's how the first one on the list will lay out: HFHFHFFHFFH = http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/2515/colonylayedoutqp8.jpg

Thanks, makes sense now.

My normal colony layout had 0 happiness and +11 resource (which is +132 spice normally). I never thought of putting two entertainment tents next to each other!
Is there any use for that extra 2 happiness though?

By the way, there are other layouts out there, like on your home world, or if you capture a city from another race...

Interesting. I don't have the game yet, but I imagine these layouts could be further sorted by the cost of placing the buildings in each?

You could sort by cost, but it looks like some of the layouts (esp. the 2 happy / 11 profit group) are just different layouts of the same 12 buildings. So the real question is, for each unique combination of buildings, what is the total overhead cost ... and is the additional spice production worth the overhead?

You can get them generating +112/hr, which is pretty great, but you can only store - even with spice storage - 10 spice per colony (30 per pickup on a maxed-out T3 planet). So three maxed-out colonies will fill up their reservoirs with spice in 5:21 (five minutes, twenty-one seconds). If you can't stop by every five minutes, you're letting spice go to waste, which means that some of that 112/hr is unnecessary, and that portion of your up-front investment isn't earning a return.

Your best bet is to sink cash into your rare spice colonies (pink, purple, maybe blue) and let your red and yellow colonies -- much more numerous -- chug along at 30 or 60 per hour. Yes, it would be nice to always pick up a full load of spice from those red and yellow spice colonies, but getting a return on your investment when red spice almost never goes over \$8K/unit is going to be a hard sell.

Yeah, I listed all the rearrangements. I could have cropped them out, but really, since Spore is all about customization, I figured I may as well leave them in so people could choose.

Compared to any other full colony layout, you're going to be spending about the same price. Is there any reason not to make it as efficient as possible? Once it fills up it stops filling, but you don't lose anything from it.

The layouts could pretty easily be sorted by the cost of buildings. That'll only matter in the early game, since once you get to fully loaded pink, green, and purple spice you're earning more than enough to cover the cost of creating a full colony. I'll see about doing that sorting later today.

Yes I understand your attempt at Binary but uhhh...

Binary is just 1 and 0 >.> No 2s, 3s, H, F, etc.

It's not an attempt at binary, it's just code representing the layout of the cities. Try reading the explanation posted with it...

Well, it went faster than I figured it would, so here it is now:

Layout.........Happiness.....Production.....Investment

HFHFHFFHFFH .... -6 .... 15 ..... 243200
HFHFHFFHFHH .... -5 .... 14 ..... 249600
HFHFHFFHFEH .... -3 .... 13 ..... 236800
HFHEHFFHFFH .... -1 .... 12 ..... 236800
HFHFHFFHEEH ..... 2 .... 11 ..... 230400
EEHFHFFHFHE ..... 3 .... 10 ..... 217600
HFHFHFHEEEH ..... 3 .... 10 ..... 224000
HEHFHFFHFHE ..... 3 .... 10 ..... 230400
HFHFHFHEEHH ..... 3 .... 10 ..... 236800
HFHFHFHEEHN ..... 5 ..... 9 ..... 211200
EFHFHFHEEHH ..... 5 ..... 9 ..... 224000
HFHFHFEHEHH ..... 5 ..... 9 ..... 236800

Add in a 150k colony cost (if you buy from yourself) and 128k for full cannon layout, and the top cost is 521,200 while the bottom is 514,800. If you drop a full-cost uber turret and a spice storage, it's up around 1.5 million. So really, the price between the layouts doesn't make a difference, you should just choose by how much production and happiness you want.

The only reason to choose a positive happiness that I know of is that it'll introduce another "problem", where your colony will complain that the citizens are unhappy and they need help. I'm not sure what that does, but I'd guess it limits your spice production there. A "happiness booster" item may keep that from happening even when at negative happiness, but I haven't tested that.
