great game!

User Rating: 10 | Spongebob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom PS2
One of the most recognizable Nickelodeon assets, SpongeBob SquarePants has taken over the minds of the young and old everywhere. Ok, so maybe the underwater critter isn’t quite that powerful of an icon, but he’s still widely popular nonetheless. He’s invaded toy stores, supermarket isles, and now he’s invading your Playstation 2 console (whether you like it or not) thanks to the minds at THQ in the form of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom.

To kids, SpongeBob is funny, cute, and adorable. To the older fans, SpongeBob is much more than a representation of the Nickelodeon formula for success. It is a parody of society – one that mocks mankind’s serious nature. The television show is a break from the troubles of life - the constant hilarity in which the characters involve themselves is extremely laughable. The characters are so completely illogical and ridiculous that many people, aside from children, love watching the popular cartoon. SpongeBob represents a break from conformity, Plankton the irrepressible corrupt nature of humanity, and Squid Ward the common pessimist that permeates today’s world.

But enough of the philosophical and cogitative analysis of SpongeBob and his gang, lets get to the game, shall we? Most of you will be quite satisfied to know that Battle for Bikini Bottom features none of the elements I just described, at least not on its surface. Rather, it is a blend of high-energy excitement, silly objectives, and wacky visuals with a 60’s style of color. If you’re a fan of the long-running series, you’ll definitely enjoy the game. Although, just as with THQ’s other franchise titles from Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, it will probably be the kiddies who purchase Bikini Bottom.

The story in Bikini Bottom focuses on Plankton, the TV shows villain. This time around, he’s looking to finally succeed in taking over Bikini Bottom by implementing his most diabolical scheme ever! Players will be able to take control of SpongeBob, Sandy Cheeks [the karate-chopping squirrel], and Patrick Star [the ridiculously stupid pink starfish]. Each character has its own unique talents and abilities, as well as their own vehicles for the mini-games and racing events found throughout Bikini Bottom.

Power-ups and fun games such as Underwear Bungee Jumping permeate Battle for Bikini Bottom’s multiple levels. You’ll encounter nine different worlds with four distinct levels in each – for a grand total of 36…not too shabby. To top it off, THQ has included a variety of boss fights, not to mention encounters with a number of the cartoon’s characters, including Gary the Snail, Mermaid Man, Barnacle Boy and many more.

To all the “hardcore” gamers out there, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but you’re probably not going to like SpongeBob’s new adventure. Nevertheless, the game will reach the hearts of many gamers with its cartoonish style and unique, wide-spread appeal. It might seem like just a kid’s game, but it really is much much more. And if you’re into the whole philosophical take on the game, you’ll at least enjoy viewing Bikini Bottom’s parody of society if not the games asinine gameplay. Look for the game to hit shelves later this month.
