Great beat-em up play, with some beat-em up cheapness.

User Rating: 7.5 | Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage GEN
As a Genesis game, Maximum Carnage is very fun. The levels are fairly interesting and varied and the story is as compelling as a comic book can be. Being able to play as both Spiderman and Venom is plus. Although the play is not very different at all, it feels different as the screen shakes when you pound the ground as the symbiote. The graphics are vibrant and things stay interesting, as you get some excellent cut scenes in the form of comic-esque stills. The audio was adequate, as I remember. Nothing special. The biggest problem I had with this game was that it had its share of cheap deaths. At times, the controls would be less than responsive and the enemies numerous, resulting in situations where it was impossible to succeed. The frustration level mounts in the later levels as the progress you've had is erased in a moment. Still, as a basic brawler, Maximum Carnage is a great game. Just be prepared for some hair-pulling moments.
