Sweet game kept from being perfect by some minor issues.

At first I didn't plan on getting this game because I thought it was gonna be a shooter because of a game with a similar name, only come to find out that Spectral Souls was a strategy RPG kinda like Tactics Ogre for the GBA.

First thing to notice is loading. It's all over the place and happens everywhere between attacks and all that. Honestly though it's not that bad... the fact that you gotta see "disc access" is the only bothersome thing. I'd have been just fine with the loading if I didn't actually have to see "disc access". Since I have a 2.81, I have no choice but to play it from UMD and it's kinda gotten to the point in which the game's so fun I'm not bugged by it... it's an issue, but not big enough to make it not worth playing. Might be a good time to upgrade to the newer sony PSP battery though, because the loading will eat up your battery so fast you might swear you were playing one of Sega's portables.

You are put in control of three kingdoms(Neverland, Simba and Rozess), which is kinda confusing as you end up playing the good guys, the bad guys, and this other army that just kinda comes out of no where but everything smoothes out pretty quickly with the storyline. Character development is pretty good and theres some good text to display whatever's on the character's mind, but one thing that really bothers me is that there is no character creation. I guess this is kinda made up for, since you are given a whole lot of units, and eventually they all combine into one huge army, but I just personally at least like to have the option.

What's really cool about this is that it takes a action point system from older RPGs like The Rifts. With this, players and enemies have a certain amount of AP they can use to pull off all kinds of actions, meaning that instead of being able to only walk and do one attack, you can probably pull off around 2-4 attacks per turn, and you can also chain attacks together to do some really big combos with lots of damage. One thing that's kinda troublesome is that after you move you can't cancel and go back, so you gotta plan out moving strategically or you might end up losing some much needed AP and being put in a spot you might be vulnerable in.

I thought the game was really hard because with the stats system, anyone who you aren't concentrating agility on gets put at a disadvantage, leaving them open to a whole lot of enemy attacks, and plus since everything takes AP, sometimes you might not be able to move and revive someone who gets KO'ed without having to waste a turn. I ended up losing a few good units because of this.

One thing that really bothers me is the saving though. When you go to save, it asks you if you wanna delete anything first, and then gives you a chance to attach some kinda name to your save(which the game doesn't bother to remember) before saving. I guess maybe it could be helpful to take a note just in case you get interrupted while playing and must stop, but I think the saving should have been simpler like Legend of Heroes. Also some of the text is really small and jumbled up, making it sometimes hard to distinguish between certain letters like when your checking item stats in a shop.

Something I really like is that, instead of just having to look at a list of what's in local areas, you actually get to walk around and talk to people in town, although, for some reason, camera options seem to get limited while in town.

It gets really complex later on with special linked techniques you can get, item synthesis, the promotions and all that, but if you ever get confused, you can hit up the tutorials and get the hang of anything you might not know.

Overall, I say it's a pretty tight strategy title, very solid in design, awesome battle system, and a cool "rock"-ish soundtrack. It's got a whole lot of content and is just really long... only real problems are the sometimes small text, loading and that weird saving feature. Matter of fact, these few problems are about the only things keeping this from being a really, really amazing 10/10 game.

All of those are really small things though, if you like strategy RPGs I say pick this game up because no other PSP strategy title to date compares!
