Some may balk at the idea of downloadable game content because let's face it...not all of it is good. But with the advent of online game distribution for both consoles and computers, we've really started to see some very impressive downloadable games. Sifting through the strategy games, puzzle games, and remastered arcade games, we find a game that almost defies description. Jenova Chen, the cofounder of thatgamecompany (which also created flOw for the PSP) is himself working on Flower, yet he also finds it difficult to put his own game into words. Chen compares the game to a poem--a piece of artwork that is up for interpretation and meant to evoke different feelings. If you had to summarize the game in a sentence, you could simply say that the game is all about controlling a wind-borne flower petal that must gather other petals to itself, eventually making the grass and surrounding plant life in the area more vibrant and lush in the process. But the game's vivid, colorful graphics and its unusual use of the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller make it seem at once highly accessible yet also uniquely relaxing. Flower even has some mysterious story elements that seem to involve dream sequences that connect the urban world (the source of each level's initial flower petal) with the natural world. We couldn't ignore a game this distinctive--Flower is our downloadable game of the show.
