Best Nintendo DS Game
Chrono Trigger
E3 '07 Editors' Choice Winner

Chrono Trigger

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: TOSE
Platform: DS
Release Date:

The Nintendo DS category was a competitive one. When a remake of a game from more than 10 years ago comes out on top, it shows that it's a game that was--and still is--endearing and timeless. Many remakes of games that have made their way to the DS have been given face-lifts, gimmicky new control schemes, and additions that no one really cared about. In Chrono Trigger DS, the original game will arrive intact, with touch-screen options that are just that--an option. The floor demo didn't let us go very far into the game, but with full-motion videos from the PlayStation release and multiplayer in the works, the DS game seemed to take the best features from the past and moved everything forward. Players who grew up with Chrono Trigger can play it again on a portable system and enjoy the nostalgia. Newcomers will have the chance to experience Chrono Trigger in its purest form, without getting that unnecessary 3D upgrade. The music by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu is arguably still one of the best video game soundtracks of that era, and the game has too many memorable tunes to list. Chrono Trigger DS seemed poised to introduce a new generation of gamers to one of the greatest games in the past and took our top spot as the best DS game at E3.
